I am looking to do a similar persona. I would like to base it of a pikeman. I am looking to see what armor would be suitable for this at a SCA level. I have a SS kettle pot on commision, and leather legs with simple fan knee cops. Body armor will be most likly hidden, under a surcoat or tabbard. I ...

Buff, vegetable/oak tanned, or tawed leather are all known in that time frame. In the 17th century buff become dominant it seem but if you were doing Tudor vegetable/oak tanned seems common among English finds. Jerkins tend to me 2mm (3-4oz leather) thick while buff coats worn as armor tend to be 3-...

Does anybody have a larger, more detailed version of this? m Slightly larger: m Some interesting things in there. There appear to be some rope-only tents wavering in the breeze. But the rectangular tents are interesting - some have wiggly ropes, but the structure of the canopy is entirely intact. R...

well where i am lost on the pattern is how to close the leg. how to sew it that is. there is the A piece sticking out to the left....where does that attach to? the whole left side of the pattern is what is confusing to me. Works just like the Thorsberg trousers: Attach the thin gusset for the front...

In a recent thread Ernst linked to a page of archaeological finds of medieval mittens and gloves. The second from the bottom is a 13th c glove with fourchettes. I have about a dozen that are reproductions of pewter badges (pilgrim and secular). I wear those when I get them, and I've attached a handful to my bag. I've been trying to follow that general principle at events. Cast pewter thing? Yeah I'll probably wear that. Beads on string? Goes in the bag. I ...

My Eastern style pants are based off the pattern Greenshield posted. From what I have seen of the fragments of pants from that era I it is a reasonable pattern: http://www.historiclife.com/images/Historical%20Clothing/Viking/Full/MeBack.jpg http://www.historiclife.com/images/Historical%20Clothing/Vi...

Are the gloves in the Churburg gauntlets original?
I an researching gloves to make some proper ones for my gauntlets for lining history use; while looking at my copy of The Churburg Armoury By Carlo Paggiarino I noticed that one pair of the late 14th/early 15th century hourglass shaped gauntlets have what looks like a two layered linen glove in them...

So what do people use for rivets with the type of scale finger that has the leather on the outside? Like the churburg milanese gauntlets or the wisbys. I would think the same thing works with the head on the outside. Looking at my Churburg photo book last night the gauntlets with the scales covered...

No, but I'm generally about wearing SCAdian, non-period accountrements, and if I were a responsible sort of person, I'd just make sure to always keep it in my bag. If you do have your pennsic medallion in your bag be prepared to get stopped if you walk by Troll. Taking 10 seconds to pull the medall...

Blaine that is a nice cover job. You actually have proper ankle supporting boots too instead of combat boots. Also some folks in the past have recommended wearing an ankle brace and covering it with hose or leg wraps; from all that I have read this is the superior option for those with real ankle is...

Amusingly, my modern hair style jives nicely with the illuminations in the mac bible. My beard should be, on the whole, a little fuller, but. um. that one i can't help.
