Erik I am glad you posted all that. It makes so many great points about modern maille vs. period mail. The one point I would like to say more about is the square of maille not doing anything. Maille is flexible. A small patch of it will not be the same as a whole shirt. In test I have seen done and ...

I think Jeff Hedgecock and Chef have posted that helms were made of sheets that had varying thick nesses, usually 14g at the skull. Lets not forget a real helm has more curves to it than 99% of armories can do today, it's also one piece raise hot from high carbon metal so it is much harder than mode...

Hehe. Gwen I find it funny that you don't consider Red Co to be striving forward because you feel the Clothing is fine and you are working on other projects. The fact that you are doing other things proves you are progressing your group forward. Hell you are doing hand sewn garb AND camp equipment A...

It does seem silly to me to make a perfect replica and cheat the buttons. I could understand adding the metal ones until the cloth ones are ready, lord knows I have done it because cloth buttons take lots of time. Well I guess my view is changed a bit. By all the examples of LH I have come across I have gained a high standard to how clothing should be made, how documentable gear should be, and not playing a part you can't afford manly don't do nobles without a high end sword, silk garb, and proper gold and si...

Suits change all the time, it's just that the changes are small and subtle. This year’s fashion is not the same as last year’s fashion and leisure suits are not appropriate at work, it is a costume really. Same thing with tunics. A 1000 tunic from Sweden may be close tot he 14th century Bog Man ...

I may be able to help here. I am a big guy and I made and wear a cotehardie. An idea I though up while considering a Maj Bible era kit was to cloth cover fanless elbow, knee, and shoulder cops and point them to the gambeson (cloth on cops the same as gambeson shell). You then wear the needed kidney belt under the gambeson. You can hide a brig gorget under the maille and over...

Make it fit close to your head like the real ones did. To often SCA helms have a ton of room in them that is not needed.
