Re: Flannel for a Cloak

These are really nice woolen flannels (warm, especially if you wash them on a hot cycle to shrink them a bit): m . It's a period weave from a sheep with wool that's very similar to medieval breeds, in a number of good colors. They're also on sale at a really good price right now. I really like this...

Kaftan looks good Dovaidu. Only real difference between yours and mine I can see is the trim width and neck. I did not cut into the back of the neck to round it at all, the seam is straight across. On the shield: What width of stock did you use for the board of the shield, and are the pieces joined ...

My own references on the shoes are admittedly third hand. Cloth And Clothing in Early Anglo-Saxon England, AD 450-700 and several other books have drawings of the two shoe finds in them. You can see the drawing on this shoe makers website for the Sutton Hoo Sf9 Mound 1

Re: {sca} awards as a lure.

Oi what a mine field topic. As in normal life SCA awards are not always fair. Some people get them and don't deserve them. Some people have talent and go unnoticed. Most people get awards in a somewhat timely manor. Yes there is favoritism and back stabbing; but that is not the majority of cases. Th...

Re: Flannel for a Cloak

My experience; it makes no matter what material you make a cloak out of if it is hot you cannot wear it. Anything adding a thick layer to the shoulders is no good in warm weather. Also wool is better in the heat than any artificial material, wool breaths but artificial materials are plastic and they...

Re: SCA Demo at Anglo-Saxon Gold Hoard Exhibit DC Dec 18

Okay so having gone through the exhibit for the first time last night I have to say I still am unsure about the cheek plate. Clearly it is not foil, but the design looks like it was mounted on top of iron. Not being able to see the back I am unsure if it is cast, carved, or hammered into shape. Ther...

Re: How To Wear A Medieval/Tudor Bar Frame Purse?

Just a word on the interpretation of a flap on the outside. This is how I interpreted my own a number of years ago but further looking at historic examples I have never found art or extant versions with a flap on a purse bar like that. If you have a ring the top should either draw string shut or be ...

I see what you mean but what I cannot tells is if the gold is mounted onto another metal. What is no clear to me is if there is just dirt in the low sections or is that rust from the low part being iron.

I have to say I could see them being easier to make, no center crease is seen (in the 14th c examples) and the plates are much smaller than making a whole leg.

I have to agree with Mac here. For one thing the footwear is in a style more consistent with the late 14th century than the mid era and then the clothing is a mix of styles not often seen together.

Re: Timeline of leather dyeing

The thing that sucks about leather research is they so often ignore the topic of dye. I have no idea if any research is done on Rus finds but I know the Romans have black and red dyes based on several pouches found. As historical resources on leather dyes no one wrote that down until the 16th century.
