You should be good if it's linen. I will take some photos of some points tonight if my digital can get that close without blurring.

I would point them if you feel the aketon can withstand the pressure. Is the shell cotton or linen? I am willing to do that to my linen aketon (I use canvas weight linen) but if you feel yours is to light weight a material I would not. If you want to point the best thing to do is place the holes in ...

Steve's reply is great. I would also like to add that people who try testing maille find that butted maille can't stand up to a real sword, axe, polearm, or arrow. If you are willing to put your own shirt together you can make a riveted shirt for around $350 including the tools from Steve's website....

"What group do you fight in?"

I do historical western martial arts with a group called MASHS, Tang Soo Do, and I am in the SCA.

"Why do you fight?"

MASHS teaches me real sword fighting, Tang Soo Do self defense and discipline, and the SCA is fun.

Your Majesty Thanks for the confirmation on the no visible plastic rule. I am glad we have taken this step. I don't think the SCA needs to be a living history group but visible plastic detracts so much from the field. Flonzy ------------------ Cheap garb is as bad as plastic armor. http://home.armou...

Historically speaking there is no known manual on fighting with two swords until the 16th century but that is rapier fighting that involves mostly stabbing and cutting unarmored persons. Now that we are talking about blunts here is my suggestions. Use high quality blunts like Del Tin or a European maker, even the practical sword from Paul Chen is nice (and only $80) but for the love of God do not use starfire or Museum reps swords. They are too heavy and will destroy your armor far ...

Wear armor as it was intended. They knew what they were doing back then. You can't go the cheap road and be safe. You need a proper arming jacket for your body and arms. You need maille to cover the gaps (go with riveted). Training before sparing is good too. My local HWMA group discourages sparing ...

Sorry if I was a little too general about SCA armories. There are many fine SCA only armories. I have yet to find gauntlets that I like but that may just be me. Again the price for high-end gauntlets is not cheap SCA maker or not and I don't think $350 is high for the quality. Now if you look at hel...

I have asked many people about ring shirts for rattan combat in the SCA. The big reason that most people dislike it is because of the weight and the repair it needs. Well unlike the sca the knights of the middle ages wore long chain hauberks, chain skirts, or codpieces depending on the era. Even with a hauberk on I would wear a cup.
