Hinrich I have not made that style of shoe but one thing I always do is try out the pattern with a stiff cloth like canvas to make sure that the shoe will fit on my foot. I think pointing the legs to your arming cote would work better than the belt method.

Cotton has one advantage, you can put it in a washing machine and it is fine. Linen has to be really well finished or washed by hand because the weave will fray apart vary easily.
