I would say a majority of SCA heavy combat is wrong? Snap shots and 90% of wrap shots we use wouldn't do a damn thing to armor with a real sword. We have no grappling. We can't touch the sword blades as if they were light sabers that could go though metal and leather like a hot knife though butter. ...

Highlander was fiction! 2) Plaid kilts for clans were not worn in the 13th century. 3) Bare heads are ungodly! 4) 99.9% of Europe was Christian! Here are some more ideas to make it perfect. 1) All shields should be required to be of a normal period size. No barn doors. 2) The age of chivalry was 1100 A.D. to 1500 A.D. in Europe. Vikings, Romans, Samurai, and Genericelts off the field. 3) Tournaments should have no missile weapons or soldiers...

Chef To be fair you are right. There was no padding under the maille. The tester made the maille so it wasn't India maille. You and Anders have some great points; I just don't believe that armor was 100% impenetrable by arrows, particularly when it was raining arrows on the field of battle. Armor an...

Again with the crossbows and bows? I have seen a local SCA archer penetrate 14 gauge butted maille and 16 gauge riveted maille with a simple 50 pound bow using a bodkin point from about 30 or so yards. It broke several riveted links and punched a huge hole in the butted maille. I have read post from...

2 SCA armor making questions.
1) If I was going to use maille for SCA combat like a 12th century Norman would wear what gauge wire is required? Would 16 gauge butted be SCA legal? 2) If I were making German 14th century leather legs with metal splints, where the splints are only 1 inch wide, for historical accuracy, what is the ...

I do not believe leather is at all period for surcoats. Suede was not used in that era at all, there was a debate on suede in this post here http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/Forum4/HTML/001552.html Your best bet is to use canvas. 100% cotton canvas is sold at any fabric store and is highly durable. ...

Brodir Sounds like you made a large axe. I based the construction in that document on a small axe head. The fix might be what I did for my bigger axe. Add a 90-degree corner or a "T" connecter to the pipe going out into the blade and add pipe running up and down into the blade. It will make the axe ...

Padding an arming cap.
I am about to make and arming cap and was wondering if anyone had a historical reference to what was used to stuff an arming cap. I assume linen tow would be period but want to see what you guys may have in a book somewhere.
