Re: Maffia Heaven

Around 150 and 155 there's a fellow in a gambeson wielding a falchion - holding, and striking, with the blade reversed in his hand. At least, in all my thoughts about how one of those would work, he's holding it with the blade turned front to back. Strikes me as very odd. He is not holding it backw...

Baron Alcyoneus be careful not to muddy the waters here, Fearghus asked about tunics with hoods as the high point in fashion, your first and second image is not showing rich people, the second and third image are not tunics they are gowns. The first image could also be a gown or a tunic, it is not c...

Part of the answer has to do with the quality of your armor. Armor itself can destroy your clothing if it is made poorly.

Re: When was the tunic/hood combo the height of fashion?

Late 13th through early 14th century; hoods start showing up in 1350 but they are rather small; they get bigger as the 14th century approaches. Um....1350 IS in the 14th century. Care to try again? Yes corrected to 1250; give me a break I wrote out 15 different eras and time dates and only got one ...

Re: When was the tunic/hood combo the height of fashion?

I suppose the subject line says it all, but let me elaborate. For me, the clothes that really scream "Medieval!" are the tunic/cote and hood combination. I know for working folk, the style persisted right up until the end of period. But when would they be worn by the upper crust, as daily...

Besides those mentioned on the east coast there is War of the Wings (almost 1000 last year if I recall right), Blackstone Raids, and I hear Birka is a huge merchant event.

What gives it away the modern leather apron, the 15th century armor, the shirtless guy in the sleeveless studded vest with a Celtic sword, or the movie version of an Elizabethan drummer boy ;)

Here's a little picture from a manuscript made in Flanders sometime around the turn of the 14th century. The image was snapped outta' the back of Osprey's German Medieval Armies 1000-1300 by Christopher Gravett. Sorry for the quality. It shows two crossbowmen in the lower left who are fully armored...

I am unsure of any 15th century evidence but it is common practice in the Tudor era. However some examples are cloth over leather to add strength to the fabric like ladies mules and chopines.

Look at 15th c maille collars, some of them did use thicker links in the part on the neck and less thick links over the body where plate was likely to overlap. Not as thick as you are thinking of but still it is neat to see such details.

I have looked at them for a bit and to me there are two types of these hose. There were two red wool jerkins in the finds from the Mary Rose, they had really cool piping/guards too. I suspect with the colors they were livery, one I recall had stitching for a cross appliqued on.

Historical straps for a breastplate

I am interested if anyone has images of the historical method of strapping breastplates that had no back plates. I have a globose I am restrapping and I have an idea how I am going to do it I just wanted to see if there was an extant example I could look at while I was at it.
