Re: James B. I challenge you to a duel!
saw you guys today for the first three rounds We only made it to 4 full rounds, Winterfell got a nick on his face ans we were both winded from all the grappling. Over all I would say the count was 2-2; our ref should have called two of the rounds because one Winterfell stabbed me in the gut and one...

Re: Maille gorget question
I have seen two things that could fit what you are talking about. I have images of a standard with brass rings in a triangle shape hanging on the outside of the collar, you see triangles like this in effigies in the 15c. I have an image of a maille cape with clasps on the neck too. Unfortunately I a...

Re: Rethinking bedding for camping events
Memory foam mattresses are made of a dense foam that in most cases does not hold dust and dust mites. They can be folded and tied into shape and it will not break the foam down or cause a soft spot. I got a queen cheep at Ikea because it had a tiny rip on it from shipping. That mattress cam rolled i...

Re: Thoughts on canvas non period tents?
The wall tents can use ropes instead of polls for the side walls, there are images of that on the sellers website. But I have never seen period art with side poles, I have seen some with frames under the canvas making a wall tent shape but never side poles. But side poles, spoke wheels, or even a mo...

I was using a stone to sharpen my axes last night and it got me thinking, what was the medieval equivalent? I would love to be able to sharpen axes in camp when were are using them.

See, I wouldn't consider the above, "good". I'd consider it to be "a poor attempt at something much cooler". To my eyes, it's a blatant failure at gothic harness. (Well, I do like the arms, at least!) It is better than some of stuff found at Rhodes. Define better; the stuff at R...

I'm just being snarky because of the "It's okay for a SCAdian, but I wouldn't cought dead in one of those" type of attitute that is pervading the thread. But the reality is that if you were in a civil war reinactment group you would sleep in your shelter halves and snuggle up to the rando...

Re: Thoughts on canvas non period tents?
This is what I call a medieval "wall tent": m The front comes to a triangular peek on the roof all in one piece vs a rectangle/square body tent with a separate triangular shaped top. Here is an example of what I think of as a rectangle/square body tent with a separate triangular shaped top...

People seem to ignore that Migration Era to early medieval had a strict hierarchy, a few rich guys at the top with mostly poor people beholden to the rich, and slavery. It was just more tribal with smaller areas of control.

Re: What is the appeal of "Early Period?"
I'd say the appeal is getting at the deep roots of the modern cultures we see. Also a greater sense of freedom as people were defined by more than the station they were born to; I've heard someone more knowledgeable than me claim that among the ancient Celts it was possible for one born as a slave ...

Ok Derian, ETAL, what is the difference between the tents found here m m and here m other than price. Well first the short side walls are incorrect for medieval either way. But I often "do" 1470s, too. Because chicks dig hose. I think this often has to do with people doing late medieval correctly vs so many bad "vikings". Basically people who like late medieval do the clothing correctly more often than not. People who do SCA generic medieval or Vik...

Wood shields seem to always be leather covered in medieval examples; could be the wood is a bit thinner than normal in this case and we are just seeing delamination of the layers.
Thomas in the UK was doing a survey of pavises a while back; I wonder if he will see this thread an comment.

Hosen are not some magic invention by the Norman in 1066 they were in use in the late roman empire and there are a number of pre-medieval finds in a German Museum on hose. Early period is easier. What's more work, a lamellar breastplate over a gambeson and leather bauzubands, or a cherbourg breastplate and articulated 5 piece elbows with 3/4 arms? A viking apron dress, or a full elizabethan with corset and ruffed collar? Yeah, I love the beauty of later period stuff ...
