I've worked with them a bit and am going to try certain pieces in the aluminum, should it work all right? The signs will be a lot thicker than any mild you would normally use for armor. This can make some patterning and articulation differences. But you will get to practice shaping and such. The si...

Hammer more slowly or gently. Or else try annealing the end of the nail first.

You can get one just like that from Harbor freight for $16.99. They are okay if you don't plan on punching a lot of holes in stainless or heavy gauges. If you keep your eyes open, you can find some real Whitneys on ebay for $50 or less. I prefer the number 7, 7 1/2, and 8 Whitneys.

Another option is to grind down some of the larger punches that you won't be using to make duplicates of the most frequent ones. I did that with one of my punch sets (HF knock off).

Well, if my conversion scale is correct .060 is the same as 16 ga. So if you could get anywhere from .048 (18 ga.) to .060 (16 ga.) you should be good for stuff to practice with. 15 in. wide would be plenty. If you are digging through their scrap bin you should just bring the pattern with. That will...

If you are wanting to get a taste of armoring you should make a pair of spaulders. That will really let you see some of the aspects of the craft. For metal check around locally. Get scrap from manufacturing places or welding shops. Check with machine shops or heating duct guys to see if they have an...

Yeah, you would think that was a given. But you are probably too new to have seen some of the discussions based on people's belief in the superiority of anime cartoon armor, katanas, and bezerker viking ninjas based on movies and popular culture.

What do you mean by emboss? Are you talking about repousse or chasing?
Here is a site with a quick demonstration of some repousse work. Same principle on dished surfaces just be sure to fill with pitch.

I make mine. I just use a drill to make a divot in a bolt. I either set the bolt in my pritchet(?) hole in my anvil or clamp them in a vice.

Did you use spray adhesive to secure the fabric onto the metal before riveting?

You could check out the local pawn shops for the style of ring you want. Take it to a jeweler and have them set different stones in it for you. Most can even change out the prongs(settings) if they are too large/small for what you want. There have been sales here where they will change the settings ...

I highly recommend talking with a local jeweler that does cusom work. They can probably get you the small quantities you will want for about the same price as from the catalogs without having to pay the shipping. They can also suggest different things that you may not think of.

I carved both my and my wife's wedding/engagement rings. I got some jeweler's wax and carved the design I wanted. I lived in an apartment at the time so had to have a local jeweler cast them up for me. After that, the jeweler asked me to make some different carvings for him to cast up and sell Chris
