Keep in mind the size of the metal you will be working with is huge and very awkward to work with. I have seen pics of similar ones with the occulars done as seperate pieces that are riveted on. That may be the better/easier way to go. I didn't find any pics online of what I am thinking of though (o...

I do. I have a notebook on my bench specifically for keeping notes during construction. If I am making something I haven't made in a while, I just look up the piece in my notebook. That helps me see if there are any hints or techniques I may have forgotten about. I will also sometimes write notes to...

If you want, I can take pics (don't have a scanner) of my pattern from this: m Your best bet is to just take some tagboard and make a rough pattern. Then place it on the horse and trim where needed. The patterns for horse armor aren't too complicated since there really aren't any complex shapes. Loo...

You may want to try flaring the very ends of the crinet plates out just a bit. That may cause the reins to slide over the gaps rather than slide between them. The new pattern looks tons better. But it also looks too small. Widen it out about 1 to 2 inches on either side and see how that looks. Chris

Sasuke, I was thinking about getting one, with modification, how thick can the metal be and still get a decent roll? I think 16 ga. was the thickest I could get any results with. The problem is they don't speed up the rolling process. You have to make several passes to get a good deep bead. Faster ...

Yup, that looks exactly the same as the HF version. I got one and in order to use it on heavier mild and stainless I had to beef up the backplate. Otherwise it flexed too much. Kind of doubt it would work well on 14 ga. unless you beefed it up really well. I haven't found much use for mine. Maybe if...

When I was going to make my first one I asked some more knowledgeable people how the originals were done. I was told they did the strapping method mostly. I thought they were riveted together as well. But it seems the rivets are just decorative to fill holes left from the forming stage (rivet everyt...

Good start. But a little criticism. It looks too flat. even just shaping the top (by the ears) so it lays more naturally would help a lot. And maybe have the main plate taper more from forehead towards the nose. Looks too blocky. I hope that doesn't come across as negative. I am just trying to offer...

I get mine from here:
http://www.bernieslapidary.com/
He is fairly local to me so I usually stop in when I am in the area rather than do any shipping. Plus, most of his hammers are more suited for silversithing than the weights we need. But there are a few I have from him that I use on almost every project.

* WARNING * Very dumb question below!!! Is it possible to blacken aluminium that way? I guess I'd have to get all the oxide off before if I want the black to stay on? I tried it once but ran into the problem of the Aluminium melting/getting saggy before the oil got to the burned/blackened stage. Ma...

Personally, If I were making it I would use a lightish leather that laces up like most rennaisance fair leather vambraces. The pattern would be a basic leather vambrace with an extra bit to cover the hand. The plates are pretty basic and require little shaping other than to curve them. I would rivet...

Actually, the B2 is better suited for armoring unless you are dealing with heavier gauges for helmets and such. The B2 can handle smaller curves I believe. I doubt you will find one in good condition for that price. But you may get lucky. If you are just starting out, you may want to look into getti...

Your best bet would be to find someone local who makes armor. This is not a complex piece and under some guidance you should be able to make it yourself. Let us know where abouts you are or check SCA.org for a local shire or group. They should be able to put you into contact with someone local. Chris

I am also sorry to hear you are giving up. I second the recommendation to make a stand and display it.
