Here is a pic of the gaunts and bucklers: http://www.oaksarmoury.com/14thcentgaunts/images/brassgaunt3.jpg The bucklers have a set of tabs on them near the strap that allow the buckler to ground out on the sword and transfer any blows to the sword instead of the fingers. That is the theory anyway. D...

Thanks for the review Evil_Merlin. Actually, those are not SCA legal by themselves. The tips are enclosed but the rest of the fingers are not. The plates along the tops of the fingers do not curve all the way down to contact the sword when gripped. There is a set of bucklers with this set that allow...

Hey!! http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/smile.gif Definitely get to it if you can. I believe he was planning to have it sometime after Pennsic. Don't remember if the date was more specific than that. I also recommend doing the elbows. The shaping is much easier to appreciate when seen in person. Sasu...

Family function
Sorry, this is sort of off topic. I just got back from a family function with the in-laws. I was talking with my mother-in-law and her sister about armor when they asked what the mail piece is called that goes around the bottom of a helmet. It turns out that their great grandmother used an aventail ...

I tried one with a sharpie as resist. Sharpie works fine for acid etching. But with this method, the area under the sharpie actually seemed to etch more than the exposed areas.

You can get better flutes with the tools you already have. I do all of my flutes with a 1 inch chisel. All you need to do to clean up those flutes is clamp the chisel in a vise. Set the flute over it. Then gently tap along the side of the flute with a highly polished, light hammer while slowly slidi...

I tried mild. The results were similar to the stainless. Brass though worked extremely well. Here is my set up. I need to rig it up so the plates are closer together. I tried having the brass plate the stainless I had etched yesterday. It sort of worked but I think they were too far apart. Was inter...

I was able to play around with the technique today. I was pleasantly surprised how well it worked. I only tried on some stainless scraps. The results looked more like sandblasting than etching though. I will try on mild to see if that makes any difference. Here is a pic: http://home.armourarchive.or...

I have a mallet made of the stuff. Comes in handy. I also have a heavy duty cutting board that I use for things I don't want to get marred. Doesn't splinter or deform as much as wood. I usually clamp it in my vise and use the edge for flaring things over. Sasuke ------------------ www.oaksarmoury.com

Nice solution to the problem. Have you considered putting the slot on the thumb plate instead? So it is hidden. I am not sure but I think in most instances the slot was to the inside on period pieces.
Nice looking gauntlets.

The bare minimums depend on what you will be doing. You will need a dishing hammer, stump or similar dishing form (or stakes if you go with raising), something to planish over (trailer hitches and O2 covers), planishing hammer, pipe for curving things over, a mallet for curving things over the pipe,...

Scaling up or down is no guarantee of fit. Human anatomy just isn't that simple. Just because two people have the same sized palms does not mean their fingers are the same length. Print out the pattern as shown and only use it as a guide for the shape of the pieces. Cut your pattern from posterboard...

It may be that the hole your rivet head sits in is too deep. The head of the rivet should still be slightly visible from the side when in the rivet set. Enough should stick out that the armor never touches the rivet set itself if it can be helped. You will also probably want to polish the rivet set....

I agree with what others have said. Buy off the table if you can. You are sure of the fit and the quality that way. Plus, there is no wait. Practice on some scrap to see what works best and gives the look you are after. Try heating then covering with oil while hot. Try oil then heat.
Any oil should work. even vegetable oil will work. Again, experiment.

For gauntlets like those I think the torch and oil method would be best. It will produce deep rich colors and you can have some hints of iridescence as well.
