The two rivets I use most are 3/16 X 3/8 and 1/8 X 3/8. I rarely need longer than 3/8 and there is less waste. I would use 20 ga. Just make sure all the edges are sanded/filed well and flare or roll them. I just use a dulled chisel, with a slightly curved edged, clamped in my vise as a stake. The curve basically matches the shape of the dished cop.
