I like Oakshotte's _The Sword in the Age of Chivalry_ and Edge & Paddock's _Arms and Armor of the Medieval Knight_ as well as Blair's _European Armor_. I'm not sure what you're seeing, but the shape of the Helms Mac makes are just like the real thing; the only real differences are the wide occularium and the fact that he made them out of 5 plates instead of 3. If you're just using batons, why not use rattan?
