Didn't some people suffocate in there tent due to a heater at some event , I think, out West. Alittle over ten years ago, I heard of a fencer in Trimaris getting a broken foil though his hand during a tournament. That same year a friend from Thescorre, Æthelmearc had her opponents epee break on her...

Solution: Don't block with the edge of the shield. Confusis says "better to block with edge of shield, then with edge of head!" (^_^) Quite true. Even better, Don't be where the sword is. I use just rawhide on my plywood shield. It has been holding up fine. Didn't work so well on my alumi...

Cut out round holes at both ends, slide on rattan. May have to shave down rattan to fit. Tool dip black or use Hurculiner for a durable black color.

One of the biggest things I recommend that you do is unlearn a bad habit that most basket users have (I had it) - basket blocking. Even if unintentional, you might do it. If you do that with a quillioned weapon, your hand will take a lot of punishment, which could be bad. That's what the crosshilt ...

I've used boild linseed oil. I used an oven but a grill or other heat source that can maintain a modest temp for awhile will work. The metal does not need to be glowing hot. I clean the piece and heat it for awhile and let cool. This will give some color depending on the heat and time. Use gloves wh...

My kites are strapped vertical. I saw it in period illustrations and one nice German site on reconstructing a kite shield, so I though I'd try it. That was a few years ago. Took abit to get used to, coming form a kite strapped at 45 degrees. I like how it works. Gives me more control of the tail. Es...

His friend is looking at buying plates. So, no cutting, deburing, etc. on the metal plates. I'd say get metal plates. Stainless plates will be thiner, thus lighter than mild plates. Shouldn't tend to get bent as mild does. No rusting, another plus. Though they are shiny. Having made my own, yeah it'...

I don't see it being any more of a training issue than regular training is now. Most of the hardest hits I've taken per person have been from newbies just starting out. A rubber cap on the end is all that is needed. It'd be great. No more haveing to jam it in or bottoming out the foam just so you opponent feels it or the foam tip folding over. Not to mention just plain poping off in the first few shots. I've done no tip thrusting with a groups from newbies to knigh...

it's the sniper plinking that I hate. Since both King Harolds (sp?) were killed in 1066 by "sniping" archers I can think its quite authentic. In the early part of period most of the archers were the nobility. Massed peseant archers didn't come about until centuries later. Vlasta I highly ...

There are times when I find it really odd the way we in the SCA have of mixing our drive for historical accuracy with our passion for a mythic culture. Well, you can mix it hot if you want. Just don't get it near a flame. Though you can do it at room temp. You could also just warm the wax to soften it, if you want. Just mash up the paste wax and start adding oil. I do about half and half. So you start with a hard paste and a liquid, mix, then get a...

Not sure if there is really any trick to it. I got a pair from Historic Enterprises and a set of hooks. They work great. You just have to wrap them tightly and they should stay put. The weave is the key, herringbone, as it allow the fabric to strech. Sort of like an ACE bandage.
