Blackoak, You'll also want to not use aluminum foil tape. That's not allowed. It's poorly written rule #1 of the weapons standard. Why did you use it? Nope, They don't have to be edged.

B. Shields:
1. Shields shall be edged with leather or other padding, or constructed in such a way as to minimize the damage to rattan weapons or other fighters.

No, as hockey gloves are not covered by that item but the next item (IV.F.3). Though I am not sure how a hockey glove is equivalent to heavy leather lined with ½ inch (12mm) of closed-cell foam or heavy padding.

It still hurts, but I don't get the brusing, swelling and swelling anymore.

Try a search for low profile armour, hidden armour, or crash pads, you will come across topics like this. It has been talked about a few times before.

My first though on seeing the pictures was get some heavy fabric and make brig. So, I'll second that thought. Maybe flip the plates over so the flat side is against the fabric and made some kind of padded garment so she doesn't get nifty diamond plate patterned bruses.
