Re: SCA Kettle Helm Brim

So, I'd imagine that a kettle helm for SCA heavy usage needs to have the brim edge strengthened a bit. Is a simple roll enough to accomplish this or is it necessary to weld a round bar into the roll? My first kettle, but likely not my last, so advice is appreciated. Be sure to put a picture up Otto!

Hal's right about the ductile iron. Be ready to pay out the behind, as ductile is a PitA to make. Ductile is what is used for very heavy use areas, rather than standard gray iron. Oh yeah, I worked 15+ in a very big foundry, that made both gray and ductile. "Ductile day' (it was usually Tuesday...

Some curled rouns stock welded on the bottom would look cool instead of an aventail.

Other than the chin/throat and needing the interior/anterior points of the knees covered, it looks real good Rod.

I, too, like the look of the leather edging!

I have one (and have had for 5+ years). Not a problem with them, but then again, I am not a production armourer. A caveat, tho. The biggest problem is with 2 things. Some of the blades are really el crappo. The second is some of them have to be adjusted to maintain the proper cutting clearance. Over...

To clarify, I have a drape on my Norman helm. This has removed some of the issues noticed by others in the thread (no breastplate to catch on, isn't against my face like a klappvisor). I have fought in one so long I doubt I would feel comfortable NOT wearing one (or at a full face helm). I wear one...
