I have to agree that banded mail did not exist, but in Eastern Europe and throughout Asia, banded armour was certainly used. Hmmm, I'd have to throw the flag on not using the haft of a weapon to contact an opponent, like using it to displace thier shield or weapon. Or using the haft to push an opponet back when they crowd in. That's just polearm 101.

I love my bascinet and mitten gauntlets. Everything else could use some work. I need to lengthen my aketon to knee length, get a knee length rivet maille shirt, cuir boille arms and legs, an aventail for my bascinet, change my leather scale corselet to brass or iron.

Thanks for the link Egfroth. The books I've read on the subject say the helmets are copper, but since there are no extant finds, I think. They could very well be caps.

Yep, definately leather loricas. You shouldhave heard the German reenactors riffing on the leather loricas and the spiele that they were giving the crowd, though taht could have been the translator's fault.

Yep, bascinets are right out for mid 13th century. The earliest evidence I've seen for a classic SCA shaped bascinet is ca 1325 English effigy. This armour from the Rustkammer in Dresden's Zwinger Palace. It's a late 16th century 3/4 suit made for one of the Saxony Dukes. I'm usually a 13/14th cent kinda a guy, but seen in person that armour is just sooooo sweeeet.

I'd have to agree with Noe. I've sighed regretfully drawing someone in a tourney, pretty sure my run is over for the day, but in the end, I go out and fight just as hard. I suppose being mediocre does have it's advantages, since when you're in the game for fun, even being clubbed by a hat is fun ;-)

I wear a full gauntlet when I use my oval, for two reasons. One is the protection it offers, since my boss is actually three stainless steel bowls riveted together. :oops: The other is comfort, I have better gloves sewn to the gaunts ;-)

I know Osprey books aren't always the most reliable, but the Late Roman Cavalryman has an illustration of Cataphracts on parade. They're wearing laminated arm and leg protection that looks much like manica. You could go that route.
