OT Research on Meiji Japan
Hi all , I know it's way OT, but I know you all have diverse interests and may be able to point me the right way. I have to do a research paper for my history class and out of the "suggested" topics, the only one that interests me is the Meiji Restoration and its role in Japan's WWII entry...

Clothing from The Hunting Book of Gaston Phebus
Greetings all, I really like the clothes that the dog handlers and huntsmen are wearing. I picked up a copy of the aforementioned book from Ebay, based on some line drawings in Mary G. Houston's book on medieval costume m The preface to my copy of Phebus is not specific on when that particular manus...

Remember, you can't push furniture or boxes up against the side of your tent. It will cause the water to wick through. Nothing should touch the sides of your tent (Or so I am told...I haven't tried it to test the rumor). As a former An Tirian, let me assure you that this is 100% true. -Derian. As a...

I think you may want to lengthen the wolf snout. In the image above it looks more bearlike than wolflike. Not that I think that's bad, as bear is my personal beast, you did say you were going for a wolf. I think that making the bascinet with a wolflike visor is a aesthetically pleasing to our modern...

http://freywild.ch/i33/i33en.html The I.33 manuscript is from the 1200s. It looks like the bucklers in the manuscript images are wood and metal, not completly metal. Completly metal bucklers are a post mid 14th century development, I think.

The problem you have is the Romans did not use arm and thigh protection very much. Now for arms, there are some things called manica m thought by some to have developed as a response to the Dacian falx, a two handed chopping weapon. Thighs are bit more problematical, since Romans seem to rely on the...

Re: Cut and Thrust - Total BS or What?
I have seen two major criticisms about C&T: 1. It's too dangerous to hit people with steel 2. People don't hit hard enough Obviously, both viewpoints can't be right. So here's your chance - I only ask the following when you comment: Have you seen C&T? Lately? Is it permitted in your area? I...

A question about a CoTT kit
I saw this kit in one of Ursus' CoTT pics. Who is the knight wearing it? I really like the look and wanted to ask some him questions about the historical examples that inspired the kit.

It's for SCA use, most likely not gonna be hidden. The stainless is 20 gauge and the aluminum is 14 gauge, almost twice the thickness. Even then, the aluminum is much lighter than the stainless (using this table for comparison m). I'm not sure what kind of aluminum, i'd have to ask the Polar Bear g...

Man that is an awesome zoom! At first I thought the rider had dragon legs, but once I zoomed to maximum, I saw that they are some fancy hosen. I wonder what the white dots are supposed to represent? Embroidered with jewels, perhaps? On a side note, I never did use that fabric to make plaid hosen. It...

Well, for starters, it's not Roman. It's a poor SCA copy of the Gjermundbu Viking era helmet, which is dated from sometime in the 800s. That makes it at least 400 years too late for a Roman wear. From the picture, I'd say it is a round helmet, and most humans have oval heads, so it will fit poorly. ...

How would you make SCA armour based on these artworks?
As some of you may have noticed by my posts, I have been in search of a good armoured appearence for a long time. Well, I was perusing Arms and Armour of Crusading Era and came across the armours shown below. According Nicolle, they are more than likely an attempt by the artists to interpret discrip...

WTT: Renfaire doublet pattern and fabric
Hi all, 2-3 Years ago, I purchased a commercial Renfaire doublet pattern. It's a Butterick. I even purchased and cut out fabric for it. Then the allure of things rennie passed and I'm left with dark blue tropical weight wool in a herringbone weave cut and pinned to a pattern, with blue cotton for a ...
