I blame Tim Newark and Angus McBride. Before I joined the SCA, I picked up a book called Celtic Warriors, a broad overview of Celtic military history (I know, I know, but I was 22 ok) On the cover is a gallowglas in maille and bascinet with a nice two handed sword. From that day on, I've really want...

It is also a matter of transistion and evolving tactics. Renaissance commanders knew the capabilities of the armoured lancer against infantry and especially other cavalry. The pistoleers were a new thing and the tactics to use them had to be devoloped. Until they were considered reliable and produce...

Nylon sinew is your friend. I can't take pics of my gauntlets as they are sailing to Korea, but I've used welding or fireplace gloves for years. I sew the tips pinky and index finger of the glove to the gauntlet, along with the thumb tip. I use multiple passes of the sinew. I also use the sinew inst...

Hanwei's Federschwert for Cut and Thrust?
Does anyone know if Hanwei's federswchert has been tried in SCA cut and thrust? Here's a link from the CAS/Hanwei website:

Maciejowski Bible infantry gambeson/aketon questions
Has anyone made a fabric armour like in this iconic image from the Mac bible? Or seen a pattern for a similar one?http://www.medievaltymes.com/courtyard/images/maciejowski/leaf10/otm10ra&bdetail5.gif
Would the proper term be gambeson or aketon? Or are they interchangable?
Thanks!

I enjoy throwing and taking shots that are hard enough to make you glad you had on armour. Anything else is a disservice to my opponent. Maybe it's testosterone poisoning, but I want a little pain when I fight, otherwise we're just dancing in armour. Shoving, shoulder checking, shield presses, all h...

I'm with Signo here. Some of you jumped all over this guy with zero attempt at constructive criticism. That being said, it is a completely fantasy design. The helm looks vaguely Japanesish, as do the greaves and the vambraces. The body armour is vaguely European Renaissance. If you like the helm the...

In the book, Medieval Costume, Armour and Weapons, by Eduard Wagner, there is a drawing copied from the Krumlov MS, fol 38, of a soldier in a similar helmet. But later in the book there are several more helmets that look just like your example. They are based on drawings from Violet-le-duc, the Fren...

Cool video, It looked like your opponent was letting you snipe at him. Your sword was honger than his, but he stayed out of his range, but in yours. I don't know it that is because of his style (I'm not familiar with the art you mentioned) or you were controling the range better than him. One critiq...

All my weapons have thrusting tips, always have had them even the big nerfy kind. On longer swords, my sweet spot is about 3 1/2 inches from the tip, so the padding never made a difference in whether a tip shot would stick or not. Unlike the duke in the video, I can't open with a thrust. I'm sure it...

I reall y don't understand this mindset of shooting at a war. I like archery, with bows and arbelests, I enjoy shooting blackpowder, but I don't practice every weekend to shoot, I practice SCA armoured combat and WMA. I don't travel hundreds of miles to shoot, I do so to fight in armour. I have some...

Sorry about the vagueness. What I am asking is kind of multi-faceted. 1. Were single leg hosen cross-gartered? When did cross gartering cease to be fashionable? Was tablet woven fabric used to cross garter? 2. For single leg hosen gartered a la 14C style using tablet woven fabric? 3. Would a man hav...

Tablet/inkle woven belt and hose garters???
Are tablet woven belts and hose garters period when worn with a tunic, hood and braies and single leg hosen? I got two pair of HE hosen from a friend, and they'll need garters. Is cross-gartering with inkle/tablet woven trim period, when worn with the above mentioned outfit? Are inkle woven garters ...

It depends. The official clan badge can be worn by anyone caliming membership to the clan. Here's the official world from Lord Lyon, the head of Scotland's College of Heralds m SCA offical usage may vary. Most clan badges post date the period cut off, and may or not be registered already with the SC...

I really enjoy two weapon fighting, but I fall inot the camp that sees it as a SCAism. There is just not enough documentation to justify it over the whole timespan of the SCA. I'm not saying it was never done, certainly some of the sagas talk about it, you've got Brian Boru, in later period there is...

To be honest, you may be asking too much of your amour. From just the SCA perspective, a helmet that is good and legal for armoured combat would be too heavy for rapier and sidesword, more'n'likely. For the steel combat, you can actually have a helmet that is good for both, provided it meets the ste...

Well, according to David Nicolle, scale armour was worn over maille in the Empire and Spain, based on manuscript drawings. In the German and Italian imperial areas it looks like the heyday of this style was the early 1300s, until coats of plates took over completely as the extra layer of torso defen...

Early coat of plates patterns?
Hi all, As I declared on my "Quest for real armour"post, I'm looking to upgrade my armour to look like real armour from the early 14th century 1300-1325. IIRC, coats of plate are in use at this time, at least on the Continent. Are there patterns for them? I found this on the Die Liebaart w...
