And here is where there is the problems. Parlan, you fight with honor, others do not. The others are the ones that ruin it for everyone else. Can anyone name any combat sport other than this one where only the participants make the judgement calls based on an "honor system" I am not talking about sp...

thanks, my main concern is even with my head imobile my nose presses against the front part. I am afraid a face shot might be bad. My previous helm was a nice sallet but I could not breath in it at all. So I am looking for a helm that looks nice (ie I do not want a bascinet, spagenhelm, or barrelhel...

fighting helmet
I have a new helm but my problem is that I am afraid it is too close to my nose and the last thing I want is a bloody nose from a face shot.
Has anyone ever used this type of helm before?

Ok, Not a big gun fan. shoot me. http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/wink.gif bad use there. what I was trying to point out was that the argument of ap arrows depends on the bow and the armour. It still is logical that armour and weapons upgrading goes hand in hand. As armour became heavier, someone de...

Okay so if arrows were totally ineffective against full plate armour, then why were archers still used and why did they have long needle like armour peircing bodkins? Can anyone explain why they had them if soldiers "knew" they were not going to work. Are you going to bring that supersoaker 5000 to ...

By and large one of the main reasons I hear from people who have come to disregard the SCA is the arrogance in the way a lot of them act.(In everything) On the flip side I have met more people in the SCA who prefer to remain real people even when they are playing this game, then not. When I visited ...

Ack White Knight. So I fall into the likes of a guy who was delussional and attacked buildings. Some insecure yahoo who hid behind a mask, never had a meaningful relationship, and called his partner "stupid" in Spanish all the time. And of course the pyschotic female who heard voices in her head and...

Not all heriditary kings were good kings. Case in point. Richard the Lion Heart and his brother John Lackland. Richard spent what 10, maybe 11 months on English soil while he was king? And his brother! Can we say "The Baron's War" boys and girls. For the most part kings come and kings go, but the re...

Ok couple of things: One. Does banding the edge with metal do more damage to an rattan sword? Two. While I really like Rhys' method (will do that with my next one. Thanks Rhys!) How does one metal band a shield. Lets say I go to Home Depot, what am I looking for? Thanks guys this has been a big help...

Sheilds how do you make yours?
Hey folks this question is for everyone. What would you consider to be the best way to edge a shield and still make it look authentic? I am not talking about within period, and I sure am not talking about shield size, although I saw a lovely photo of a guy with a dinner table strapped to his arm. ht...

Through many egagements during the middle ages knights fought dismounted. There are tons of references of King Whosie Whatzuz had this many groups of dismounted knights led by Lord So Andso. Most believe that a knight on horseback was well nigh invincible. Then someone came up with the schiltron, th...

Combat Archery from the guy who started this.
First off, I knew I was dropping a hand grenade when I posted the original question the way I did. I just did not realize I dropped an H-bomb. Now then in all of this I do not think I actually voiced my thoughts about archers and knightly combat. My thoughts are this: When an archer went into battle...

Combat in Historical Re-enactment Groups
Is there any one here who belongs to a historical re-enactment group? Not a recreation group such as the SCA, but a living history group. If so do you do combat? What do you use and how much of it is staged and how much of it is free style? I am really interested in how the various groups view re-en...

Rys, SCA combat is not historical combat. We all know that. Some manuals I have seen have men in full armor, others in skintight clothes and others still in full nakedness. I am not going to infer that from just the pretty pictures those soldiers went out on the field wearing just their underwear. Y...

Just want to add a little something here. After spending a number of years in the SCA I left for quite a few reasons (non of them had anything to do with knights or CA). A hanging guard is when you hold your sword above your head with the blade pointing down. One of the advatages is that you can cover your head and upper body with the forte of the blade. It is one of the techniques one uses with a backsword or a sabre. You can cut up with it, or for more powerful bl...
