Good question.... Now I guess I need to answer it huh? *I* want to do the military impression, but I don't want it to be exclusively military, since my wife wants to play as well and she don't do sword stuff. I have contacted a couple UK groups like britannia and [urlhttp://www.comitatus.net/]comita...

Interest in a 5th Century Reenactment group?
I've been asked to gauge interest in a 5th Century reenactment group here in the US. The group is to be primarily focused on 5th Century England (yeah, I know it wasn't England yet, but you know what I mean ) and would be centered in the southeastern US (I"m in south GA). Is anyone else interested? ...

don't feel like you have to rush onto the field just because others say they did and that you should. DO put together a kit that you can really be happy with and that is comfortable to wear. It greatly increases your enjoyment. Don't keep trying to reinvent the wheel. When in doubt, look at what wa...

Shopping for Early 13th Century Greathelm (SCA)
I think the topic says it all. I'm looking for something like the early great helms, just about the point that they started putting backplates on them. Of course, I want it SCA legal (hence the "SCA" in the topic ). Anyone know where I can look? I want mild steel, 14 gauge would probably be ideal, b...

I used to be an American Civil War reenactor. I was with the 2nd GA Artillery before I turned 16 and started to play with the 4th GA Infantry. I had wool and cotton for my clothing, hand made Jefferson boots, the works. I looked the Civil War soldier. It was fun, but I didn't give a damn about the C...

See? With simple web search techniques, people were able to find the answer to the original question. Now, a more involved question would be something like this maybe: I have been doing some research lately and I find the term "hide" used to refer to an amount of land. With it being the amount of la...

Do they have a place? Sure. However, I personally believe that they should put forth some effort in being authentic and finding out what is authentic. I would like to see some minimum for authenticity set. If people just want to do that minimum, that's cool but I think it should be there. Many of th...

I guess everyone seems to miss where I only said to put forth an effort, not necessarily a successful effort. There is a huge difference between "What was the War of the Roses?" and "I've looked on the net but couldn't find anything on this, can someone here help me?" An effort put forth isn't much,...

I'm sorry, but I can't believe that people who can find this board can't even do a rudimentary web search on google. People being asked to TRY to find the information first isn't a case of them being told to "go away"...

Well, the way we used to do it was that the first time in armour, the new guy got to throw all the shots. The only exception to that being a tap to the helm to remind them to keep thier shield up. Then we bring them up slowly until one day they realize they just fought against someone going full spe...

The idea that just because they can beat thier buddies who have just as little training means that they will be an SCA bad ass instantly. Actually, many think they will be a bad ass automatically regardless of whether or not there is any prior sparring. I've seen this one more times than I care to c...

(SCA)How to get folks started down the road to authenticity
Since we (myself included) spend a great deal of time complaining about the lack of authenticity in the SCA, I thought it would be fun to see what folks would do in this hypothetical situation. You are known in your area for authenticity, and you are approached by Joe Newguy. Joe wants to be drastic...

I'm sorry, but I really think that spliting the forums is a bad idea. If you have no interest in the threads about SCA tourney results, then simply don't read them. Just as I wouldn't read one about potential x-rays of a German crossbow (crossbows not being my thing). If we were to label and potenti...

I apologize to everyone. I am human and was mistaken apparently on the number of acres that makes a hide. Bascot, Would you agree that there is no set amount of land that equals a hide? If so, then that is the answer to the question. A hide of land was the amount of land that was needed to support a household of folks. I think in this regard, household means family unit, not noble house with servants and other retainers present. There is no real set amount of land, since different land yeilds different amounts of crops. For good...

I had the two Duke John's as heros. Duke John the Mad Celt was pretty close to me geographically so it wasn't a big deal to see him. However, I almost pooped in my armour at my first Fool's War when he pointed to me and indicated that I should come and fight some pickups with him. He showed me somet...
