For Body armour, I have to suggest a good 15th Century Brigandine. You can get steel banding material at places like Home Depot and Lowe's and cut it in the appropriate lengths and then rivet it to a doublet. Not overly difficult, except the sewing part http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/wink.gif then...

Winterfell, You said that people calibrate according to the armour that they see, correct? I guess that is a phenomenon where you have been and not where I have been. Granted, I've only played in Meridies and Trimaris, but I've never seen anyone adjust calibration because of what armour someone wear...

I honestly don't think anyone ever intended for the SCA to get so big. I also don't think anyone intended for the SCA to cover so much of a time period, and now they don't want to change anything for fear of losing people. I agree with Vebrand on the armour as worn rule. The typical kit here in Meri...

For boffer fighting, I would think 20 gauge would be ok. You guys don't hit with the force we do in SCA or some of the live steel groups either, so I don't see a problem with that at all. Your group should have some safety standards if they have a minimum gauge metal for armour should be. Check with...

1st Choice: 13th Century. This is mostly because of it being the last full century of the Age of Maille, maille being THE defensive material. The armour is cool and the era is cool and all of that, but it's also a time where the tourney is dangerous as hell and, from my meager knowledge, still war t...

I said it was perfectly acceptable, which according to your quote from Corpora, it is. Is it ideal, no. However, I'd rather see a handful of good roman's than a butload of crappy generi-celts Image

Gordon,

The Roman era is perfectly acceptable within the SCA. Something else you need to decide is location, since all celts aren't created equal. That will largely determine your armor and such. Gaul, for instance, was heavily roman, and you could do the auxillery thing. Just an example

I did Civil War Reenactment for many years wearing a good deal of wool. It wasn't as bad as some people make out personally. I'm updating my garb myself, and I think I'll be using as light a wool for summer clothing as I can get just to be safe http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/smile.gif Bran

A lot of people think that the Celts fought naked, but that was not the norm, just common. Most Celts seemed to fight unarmoured but not all. It is believed that the Celts invented maille and that the romans took the idea and ran with it for thier hamata. If you choose to portray a Celt who is curre...
