I use a hard-on-hard dishing setup also. I have to be careful not to strike the steel to where it pinches between the hammer face and the oxy tank bottom and leaves a little blemish. And for one reason or another, when I dish hot rolled steel with my sledge hammer into the oxy tank bottom, the steel...

Dishing Times

So, how long does it usually take you guys to dish out a helmet top? Reading Ideval's post about spending the last 45 minutes dishing had me wondering how long others take and what hammers you use. When I dish 14ga and thicker steel, I use a 3lb sledge with a rounded head to dish into a oxy tank, th...

No, according to the page, it says he's taking 12 orders at Pennsic, finishing those up, and then all future orders will be taken in groups of 12 and no more orders will be taken until he finishes all 12 orders. 1: Scott posted on here in response to my question on spangehelms a while back and basically said that after you take the measurement around your head, add four inches to it for the brow band if you are going to use 1 inch of padding. For the top and side bands, make your measurements and add 2 inch...

Ideval, the pattern I used for that one was just the Armet pattern in the Pattern Archive with some modifications. I increased the side by 5% (which kinda screwed up the dimensions of the pattern, making it a bit too round, I think) and ground some of the excess away. Yes, putting a crease down the ...

Are you talking about just riveting a strip of steel to connect the two halves? Erik, will you do me a favor and never, never, never take that page down? It's something I'll drool over for a long time. If I had the money, I would purchase it simply to have it. I know I couldn't fit in it, but so what - that armour is a gorgeous example of why I'm in this game.

Yes, I'll still be making the tops, but I'm just clearing off some workbench space - these helmet tops can take up a lot of valuable space. Progress of my gaunts (pics)

I decided to take Brodir's advice and go with the splinted cuff, which is more Wisby-ish and closer to period than the exaggeratedly flared cuff I was going to slap on there. Those bumps you see on the back of each finger were made with a dapping die and punch set which I purchased from Harbor Freig...

Heya, I’ve got four helmet tops that I need to get rid of and I’m open to entertain all reasonable offers. They aren’t pretty and require some touchup, but if you’re looking for something to help get you on the field faster or just for your loaner bin, then you might be interested in these. ...

Problem with my spangenhelms...

What do you guys do when you are making a spangenhelm and after you assemble the bands together to make the basic frame, you find that your spangen panels are dished too much so that there is a sizable gap between the bands and the triangles? Or, if they aren't dished too much, then the bands seem t...

Quite a nice piece of work. How do you plan on moving your head in any direction? Question: why are there twice as many lames on the gauntlets on the suit's right hand then on the left? The right gauntlet appears to have 5 or six lames over the back of the hand and the left one clearly has three. An...

Yes, there are a ton of locking pliers that look like them, but replacing these things is not so much a matter of functionality as it is a matter of principle. My dad was bent because I broke his perfectly fine Ward's locking pliers. It sounds paltry, but I'm just trying to make it up to him.
