FWIW, According to Steve Sheldon's FEA Analysis of the strength of butted rings (which is now on my favorites), 18ga 1/2" rings will deform sufficiently under only 8.9 pounds of force.

Aventail on a Sugarloaf?

Heh, this is only like my second post in this room in two years... Anyways, I want to make a sugarloaf like the one in the pattern archive, but I want to add an aventail to it to protect my neck against sticks, since that is how we score points in our group. What I'd like to know is (1) will it just...

Before a dozen Archivers jump on you and say "it's not strong enough/it'll pull apart under its own weight/try ___ga instead" I thought I'd actually answer your question.

I think a quarter mile of wire should be sufficient.

The best I can tell you is to picture the outer ring of a bullseye target. You're going to probably need a big leather circle with a hollow center. The center should be as big around as your helmet itself and the outer edge of the circle needs to be the point where you want the aventail to end.

This is something I've been thinking about recently. Thanks for reading my mind Rainald! The way I see it, putting patterns up on the net is like putting up a photo essay, or any of the other essays the Archive hosts. They are there to help other people. I talked to my dad tonight about this and he brought up a very good point: We're going to Disneyland this weekend (fourth time for me in less than a year) and in Downtown Disney, the mall-like area between the parks, there is a GIANT LEGO store that has just about everything under the sun. You know ...

Richard, something in your earlier post bothers me. You said that you hit people who wear the minimum (for lack of a better word, "sport fighters" - my words, not yours) armour in those unarmoured spots as hard as you would if they were armoured fully, right? This I can understand. You're not being ...

Also, I don't know if it actually helps, but we always throw a sprinkling of rock salt into the vinegar. My dad says that it is to speed up the process, but I don't know any better and just go with what he says because it always seems to work.

We've always had great success with leaving the pieces overnight in vinegar, taking them out and wiping the crap away, then dunking them in water and drying each piece. Ask William of Almaden how well the mill scale came off his pieces that he left in the vinegar for a week http://www.armourarchive....

If I may make a recommendation for cutters, the Wiss brand aviation snips, model M3 and M5, are ideal for cutting links. The produce butts like // and will last a while if you don't abuse them on lots of thick ring/small ID combinations. Yes, plastic sucks for a mandrel and steel definitely rules. H...

Okay, you guys wanted a petty rant, here we go: So, I'm looking through the few pictures of muttman in his new gear (on the Armour board) and in the first couple of pictures he is fighting some guy with bare arms and seemingly bare thighs. My mouth started watering at the thought of stinging those l...
