I think its a Victorian reproduction. Note the direction of the overlap on the finger gatlings. All period references I've seen (from my admittedly limited experience) show the finger gatlings overlapping downward, with the plate nearest the fingernail being underlapped the one above it. Also, there...

I like using stainless steel. Strong, rust-preventive, and doesn't stink like galvanized wire does over time. Nickel silver is fine too. Copper and brass tarnish, and galvanized fades to a dull grey. You could always go with titanium http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/smile.gif Niobium is also nice to...

I lost the URL, but I saw a site where this private collector makes chainmaille hauberks for his GI Joes and other action figures. Uses something like 1/8" stainless steel rings or something. If you think that's small, you should meet Eric Matwe, a guy who made maille from links with a 1/64" interna...

Woohoo! I've been linked to! http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/smile.gif If you'd like to check out more splinted leg stuff, go to the URL below which shows a splinted greave I made. Sorry, I don't have the patterns for that anymore. I have since taken off the little scale shaped plates on the upper ...

Pronounciation of armour terms
Alright, I need some clarification here. How do you pronounce the following terms?: 1. armet (ar-MET?) 2. burgeonet 3. buffe 4. lame 5. coif (the endless "koyf" v. "kwaff" debate) 6. sallet (Sally or sal-ette?) 7. spangenhelm (long a sound or is it pronounced "spogenhelm"?) 8. chaffrous 9. cerveille...

Drett, check out this page: http://www.mailartisans.org/articles/article/45degree.htm
It's an article for joining 4-1 at a 45 degree angle, but I think the same principles apply for 6-1. If this doesn't help, try the Chainmaille Board at http://chainmaille.prohosting.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi

I'm sorry but you're wrong. Every competent scholar knows the correct answer, but I'm afraid I'll have to provide it myself. The armies who wore these helmets, especially the Spanish, marched quite a lot. As a result, they were subject to quite a bit of pounding by the sun, wind, and rain. When marc...

I get mine from RJ Leahy. They sell the 3/16 x 3/8 mild steel round head rivets for $3.50 a pound and you get 206 rivets per pound. It's especially convenient for me since their warehouse is just a few hours north of me, so shipping times are only a couple of days. Those brass rivets you're talking ...

Banner Prototype
I'm currently playing around with a handful of different banners for the armoury and I think I like this one best. It needs some tweaking, but I think it's clear:

I've used hand files, belt sanders, dual action sanders, bench grinders, and angle grinders, and I keep coming back to the angle grinder. It's faster, and much cleaner if you know what you're doing with the tool.

Thanks! The number of lames and their placement, along with the plainness of the cop fan, were something that Lord Charles and I discussed in our various conversations about these legs. He prefers the more plain look on the fan and for these legs I tend to agree. Having flutes, creases, or other com...

Bonjour.

Using the literal translations of "Society for Creative Anachronism" does not sufficiently establish what the group is about. 30 years ago when that name was first brought up and solidified by the powers that be, it gave people some leeway. The driving force behind the SCA is its membership and tren...
