In Modo Antiquo

Hey, where are those threads? Maybe I missed them when I scrolled through the pages, but I wanted to read them again. I was thinking about it some more this morning and wanted to refresh my memory.

Thanks.

I still plan to come up there for the seminar and may be bringing William of Almaden. Maybe I'm just weird, but how can you NOT be interested in learning period techniques? I mean, we're out there acting like medieval knights - shouldn't we at least try to fight like them? But that's another rant en...

And I know how much it means to receive an accolade from a member of your family.

You do us all a great service.

As Frederick the Heavy told me, this stuff needs to be annealed further. It is soft, but not quite soft enough to punch through with a lot of success. Also helps in flattening the ring.

Hardened Leather Breastplate question

I plan on wearing a simple hardened leather breastplate under my gambeson and hauberk to protect my body. But the question I'm dealing with right now is what thickness and type of leather should I get to make this? I thought that 10 ounce leather might be enough once it is hardened but am not sure s...

Thanks for all the advice gents. I'm not too keen on using plastic in my armour, but I don't have to worry about the temptation since our group doesn't allow plastic armour (except groin protection). I would not trust a 1/2" thick gambeson and maille as sufficient protection against an axehandle, so...

I would suggest going to www.mailartisans.org and looking there to start with. I used the 90 degree sleeves on my shirt, which basically means that attaching the sleeves to the shoulder was easy on the top, front, and back, but it was an 'interesting' experience trying to figure out how to connect t...

Fluting/Creasing over welds?

This is something I've been thinking about for a couple days. I know that when you weld something, say with a MIG or TIG, that the wire is melted red hot and fills in the tiny gap between the pieces. For the sake of argument, I don't want to get into how they work. My question isn't about that. My q...

Thanks for the tip Owen. I'd like to try to stray away from using something like that, but will do it if I can't find another viable option. Start by going to www.aemma.com (I think its .com, might be .org) and look in their publications section. Fighting in Chainmaille - Advice?

I've decided to abandon my coat of plates temporarily and see how fighting in chainmaille feels. Now, I don't like getting hit in the ribs as much as the next guy, so I've been thinking about ways to save my tender innerds while still giving the impression that I'm fighting in chainmaille alone. Her...

FWIW, the 90 degree seam is only visible under the armpit, an area that not too many people generally look... I just finished putting some short sleeves on my shirt and had to deal with this. Both seams are as easy to work with. I just chose to have seam under my armpits instead of across my chest. ...

Good work Halberds! My best advice for working with bands that go over a helmet is to make sure they are dished evenly using the same form that you made the helmet halves in. They'll line up much nicer, although the picture you've got there is pretty nice http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/smile.gif

Possibly the greatest hurdle to overcome in any group is getting those new members, or keeping them interested. It really takes a special breed of person to show up and stick around. What I have learned is that -you- cannot seek them out; they have to seek you out. Suiting up in armour and hitting y...
