Thaddeus has a lot of the right of it, IMO.
One caveat. Using the edge is useful. The flat part is useful too. Use whichever part accomplishes your goal. The edge block (punch block) provides a "counter" effect when used for parrying, although it can be used to bind and re-direct too.

You have never made the one according to the plan? Perhaps a wiser decision would be to make that one first... Looking at the site briefly shows over 100+ pounds in the couterweight, which means it'll throw a good 5 lb rock or so... That will do significant amounts of damage... trust me And I'd like...

You can't hide in a tourney- this is true! 100%! Certainly you can. Carry a big shield. For me, asking melee or tourney is like asking chocolate or cookies. My answer would be "Yes please! Both!" Like Gorm, I did use to believe that they were, ahem, Member Length Comparison Contests, and I felt no ...

At least they aproximate the shape with a cross hilt or a basket. Otherwise they look like something that belongs in a giant martini glass No its not perfect but there is trying and not trying. I for one prefer to be in the trying camp. No they don't! They are big long round sticks, that have no pe...

mrks, I found a lot of this kind of tape on Ebay: STRAPPING TAPE 3M #8934 which I did a quick google search on and found this page... m My question is, did you get/use the 8934 model (which looks similar to what we use from Wally-world) or do you use the much tougher 893,897, or 898 models? Sean touched a bit on it, but I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the drinking age and the change from "tactic-consent" to "underage-drinking = gone" that has occurred in my kingdom. When I joined the SCA the first time (as a freshman) one of the big draws for me WAS the partying/reveling.... I ...

Lots of good advice given here. The idea that you throw a regular flat snap first that is targeted a bit wide is key. The hand should move in a straight line towards a spot about 1 foot to the right of the target (for a righty) and then freeze in mid air at the moment when that imaginary spot one f...

IMO, MRKS has the right of it. The shot starts like the flat snap... the elbow is pointing towards the ground. As the arm fully extends, and you hit the point where you would start rotating the wrist, you lift your elbow up so that instead of pointing at the ground, it is now parallel with it. This ...

Don't have a quotable source, but went to a ATACCC (Combat Casualty Care) seminar last July, and they discussed mortality in Iraq and Afghanistan. Right on, Maeryk, spread the good word! I am aghast sometimes at the horrid hacking "technique" people use with glaives. What's the challenge? if you can kill with a polearm from 6" off the target? Am I understanding this correctly? I had three people stand there and tell me that it was impossible to generate killing force on the end of a pole, if I started from only six inches from their heads. Every one of them sai...

my thoughts? I can throw a seriously excessive single handed throw.. and I'm not "SCA Standard A: Large FIghter".. body mechanics and leverage.. Do you consider creasing 14 gauge domes excessive? Hell.. I can throw the mythically impossible "six inch kill" with a pole too.. won a six pack of beer f...

As far as my damn camp setup goes- I am just dropping the ball. Gotta get to work on new stuff. As far as the purpose of the Anvil, if there is one thing that I have learned from all of my reading, it is that regardless of political affliation, the culture of "good men-at-arms" was almost like an i...

REALLY!?!? I thought compound bows were a modern invention, but I guess the Romans were a lot more advanced than what we give them credit for..... Thanks Matt! In fact the spring has been my dominate victory blows when fighting James when he was with sword and buckler but with the bigger shield, he was capable of deflecting my blow with the rim of the shield and my sword skidded off to the ground. I think yeah, as you said, I should make it m...
