Thumb Design

You know, I've made 4 or 5 pairs of gauntlets know, and picked up and tried on many more.

The thumbs are always a problem. Why? I think because the mounting/attaching/construction method does not properly reflect the joint construction of the thumb. How could we more accurately reflect that?

I'd recommend 18 gauge to begin with. Spaulders are fairly simple to make, and easy to repair/pound out. If you find that the rate of repair is too high, increase the gauge.

(Edit again to reflect the new web page) Well, I've finished the construction of the first pair of hardened steel gauntlets from Sir Alexis' pattern. On your polearms, I stain the shafts (if its allowed in your area) to take away the rattan look, and to give the impression of more real wood.

Other ways to make weapons look good:

Wire wrapped handles.

For the buffing wheels, it depends upon what you're working on.

If you go to the grizzly site, and download the catalog, page # 127 (or so) in the buffing section has the what compound with what finish and what wheel chart to allow you to use the proper stuff.

Other materials besides steel

When you guys need stuff like copper and brass, where do you guys get it from. I've done the "buy the brass kick-plate" method, and the brass is actually REALLY hard to work.

Any advice? Online suppliers of reasonable price?

Anyone ever worked in Nitronic 50 Steel?

One of my co-workers mentioned this steel, and so I checked it out. Was just curious if anyone had ever actually used it before.

http://www.suppliersonline.com/propertypages/nitronic50.asp

Its supposed to be really hard and extremely corrosion resistant.

Sounds great, but I do think that 80/20 drill spar is a bit over drill, and would not add additional drills until the rate on the current drills drop it to the 60/40 or 50/50 mark.
