Well, took out the old rosebud tip on the torch last night, and some scrap metal 1040 peices. Our method was fairly simple. Heat till no longer magnetic (use good magnet) and then quench in ice water (which usually after a quench or two became water). In general it seemed that the 1040 would become ...

Two things: #1) Don't use 14 gauge for everything. It will just perpetuate the stupid myth that "knights were so heavy they had to be craned into position" by the people who see your armour. Try to use the appropriate gauge for the job. Follow Ideval's advice. #2) Yeah, you can hammer harden stuff. ...

Well, a 1040 4'x8' sheet of 16 gauge is around $35-$40 depending. Where as a 36"x72" .032 sheet of 4130 is around $50 plus shipping.

Crusader Elbows

Me and my armouring cohort made up a set of crusader elbows for my best friend and they turned out really nice. I wanted to show a picture of them to the people here. I'm really proud of the clean lines, the nice finish and polish on them. Click on the pictures to see the full size images. <img bord...

Hardening 1040 Steel

I stumbled upon this site http://www.suppliersonline.com/propertypages/1040.asp while searching for some sources for annealed 4130 steel. The interesting thing is that it says it can be hardened. This is in conflict with everything I've been told... any one have more info on this dichotomy?

Had our normal armourer's night last night, but the attendance was a bit lower than normal (only about 5 people working on stuff). Got WAY more stuff done.
