I like Richard's list a lot. I'd add:

For feeling like a knight in the lists in the late 1400's and 1500's, matched polearms ,not unpadded glaives, polearms.

Single sword to three counted blows...

Helm in progress

Well, we're working on a chapel de fer for a prize for the most honorable fighter in our last tournament. We're taking pictures as the helm goes together so that we'll have a record and that the next one will go faster... Any, pictures can be seen here http://cchipman.homeip.net/images/Chapel%20de%2...

Both of the above two posts are wrong, at will give you answers up to 3 gauges off. Use the inch measurements provided by the http://www.shoptools.com/sheetmetal.htm page, and multiply by 25.4. That will get you the correct millimeter to gauge. The "gauge is equal to one over the gauge number" crap ...

My opinion? Spend $100, but HF Shear... Save up $400 more and then also get B2... HF shear in my shop regularly cuts 14 ga steel without a problem... also thick aluminum and thinner grade steels... its all about getting it set up correctly..

Couple of peices of advice. #1) Symmetry. Make sure that after cutting out and dressing your peices that they are symmetrical. It is vitally important or the helm will be an absolute bear. If you can't get them symmetrical, then recut new peices. Trust me on this. #2) Get lots of either bolts and nu...

Matt, I'd tactfully suggest that the money issue in your house is a bit out of control. If you are the wage earner and she the homemaker, budgets for stuff should be established. If you really want good help, go find a custom clothier with skills in grading. One of my friends is a seamstress who worked for a children's clothing company doing grading (making one pattern into the many sized variants). She helps a lot on stuff.

I'll digress for a moment, but it seems to me that a lot of people do not pay attention to failure methods when constructing armour. To wit, coat of plates. Has 3 main components: 1) Leather that the plates are attached to. 2) Rivets to attach the plates 3) Metal plates. In the course of fighting, t...

Small for my kingdom, but hey, we're Ansteorrans. The temperature makes is so that we find it easier to carry a big shield than wear heavy armour.

Typical heater size in Ansteorra is 2'x3'. My heater is 24"x30", but I'm a short guy.

Watching Tape

Well, my best friend got a recorder and we were finally able to watch some tapes of fighter practice. As always my first thought was "Gee I'm fat". However, after that it was all good. High points: 1) I apparently have about a 1' vertical leap in armour. This is cool. 2) My shots have a good snap on...
