Mike makes a point, if you are using a sword to cut it is not about power, the power is generated in the proper technique and speed just like punching Sure... but is proper technique slashing through (surface cutting) ? surface concussion ? I bet the answer to that question would be "I dunno, what ...

It seems to me that when I watch an SCA fight, the attacks are excessively hard. I have seen a lot of the flailing offline. That much force is not necessary to inflict damage with a real weapon. I think it is done that way because the SCA'er knows that fighting that hard will not inflict as much da...

you are correct. the study of any martial art is not the issue. its the bs attitude of book readers that claim their kung fu is the strongest that annoys me. especially when comparing two totally different things. To imitate your tone and sweeping generalization, I assume you would be equally annoy...

It's becoming more clear that very few people can avoid taking comments personally. For the record... I'm very familiar with SCA fighting as was practiced in an Artemisia and an Atlantia chapter. I knew several people there and was very close to joining before I found a WMA groups that was a much b...

These are both free and much better, clearly written and not empty of humility: Bellatrix School Fundamentals of Oldcastle Sword and Shield If you really want Trompe L'oeil, try this. That vast majority of people on the battlefield had little to no armour. Prevailing scholarship now suggests that most medieval battles were, in fact, conducted by a largely professional, well-equipped soldiery. Even my friends in Regia who, when they first assembled would limit mail-clad impressio...

What are you trying to accomplish? Jean Paul --snip-- If this is somehow threatening, I apologize, that was not my intention. However, I will continue to offer what I feel is a better way to do things, which are based off historical manuals and period research. This is NOT an SCA board. So conflict...

People see what they want to see I guess so that they can feel better about themselves. JP Isn't that what you are doing? I don't know. I know I don't think I want to see more misguidely condescendingly superior Western Martial Artists denigrating the SCA, but it certainly seems like I do see it in...

And I've seen very few SCA fighters who DON'T stand in one place. So I guess it's all relative to individual exposure and experience. Perhaps the only comments of mine you notice are when I am DISCUSSING the SCA. I certainly do not sit down to every post I make with the intent to poke at the SCA. B...

We recently had this discussion on our lists, The idea that you can't wear a shield, or that a sheild attached to your arm is armor, is a Pennsic convention that has worked it's way into our collective rule set. The society rules do not prohibit it, and as far as I know neither do many kingdoms. Th...

Malcolm_Mor --snip-- The reasons I've been told for this custom, and the ones that I believe in, are that an inexperienced fighter may feel that they "have" to accept the challenge, even if they would rather not fight. There is also the problem that if I were to win it could appear that I'm just pi...

Ah, it's easier as a squire / man at arms. At that point you can walk up to anybody that is standing around and ask if they want to fight. The worst thay can say is no, and then it is almost always becasue they are waiting to fight someone in particular. If you see two people fighting and one stand...

Like I said, I call on all Earl marshals to ban the unpadded ones. I'm afraid I have to disappoint you, as far as Drachenwald is concerned. I guess the question would be do you wear it outside your cloths as part of your garb or under your garb? A competant shieldman can absolutely wipe out whole sections of spearmen that cannot manueuver out of the way to get an angle. In the close press the lances become almost useless. I have seen Cuan wade in and just wipe out whole groups of spears. While undoubtably true, in your example Duke Cuan >>...

Throwing the "why are far eastern personas in a western European persona game" arguement out the window. To make a unpadded polearm that therefore mimics a "real weapons" handling characteristics only requires buying 1.5" rattan, shaving down the sides of the handle area (which also helps with flat/edge orientation), and then leaving the head unshaved. Whala! Balanced properly (i.e. head heavy), good ...
