Or, since you are Half-Orc, you could just yell something bitchin' like "Meat's back on the menu, boys!" or grunt alot and stuff! Maybe you should go back to your blacksmith persona....after all, I watched Kingdom of Heaven again last night, and that blacksmith kicked ass! Well, actually he sorta l...

My doc doesn't recommend a brace. He says it'll serve to remind you that you've had an injury, but a lot of people become dependent psychologically upon them. I tore my ACL playing soccer back in 1998. Had it repaired in August, and was fighting in Melee's by November (Battle of 3 Kings). I wore my...

I just checked the most recent version of the Society's governing documents; it doesn't say the tourney must be double-elim, it just says that it must be determined by 'individual combat', though a waiver on that could be gotten by petitioning the Board; my kingdom actually has a law in place which...

Re: Gulf War Crash Course Training
Due to real life the last two and half months has not allowed me to get some much needed practice as well as excersise to be prepared for the War presently. One great thing though I will be moving into my new house which will be 20 minutes from fighter practice. I have 9 local fighter practices bef...

Jean Paul, I do not believe that the formula that you found in accurate for very intense exercise levels. If you put in your 190 BPM max heart rate and 170% VO2max you get a target heart rate of 276. There is currently a huge amount of debate about the usefulness of heart rate monitoring as it rela...

JP, #1) With what did you do the exercises? cycling machine? elliptical? You can use almost any type of exercise. The scientific studies were mostly done with and ergometer. I also use the below variations: 1. Heavy bag punching drills 2. Squat thrusts 3. Sprints #2) How did you evaluate both your ...

Chan, I'm not certain about the power during your bouts, but the video shows good power and speed upon the impact shots. If your shots during sparring impacted with the same velocity and power, and you are simulated un-armoured combat, I would think that you would indeed be well justified in expecte...

baseball players swing with multiple bats for warmups and limited practice. it's common in training programs to do thing with extra weights like that (extra heavy gear), but it's supposed to be a rare occurance. maybe once a month. it works, but i'd do some more research into how to do it. Sure, du...

--snip-- Both Roman and Medieval authors mentioned training with a double-weight sword and shield and a pell. This is supported by modern athletic science, as well. --snip-- Buran, I'm skeptical of this last statement. Do basketball players shoot free throws with double-weight basketballs? Do baseb...

Dante della Luna wrote:Arm curls will do absolutely nothing for you.
Says you.
Dante, I kinda agree with him. Why do curls? What shots or movements require a lot of biceps strength?
Now, I wouldn't ignore those muscles, but they are definitely not the ones I would work on to the exclusion of others.

Just a recommendation before you go into full production, you really should make the face plate mount to the outside of the cheek pieces. Society rules state that: Armor Requirements A. Armor Contstruction 1. Helms g. Last sentence: Face guard bars or mesh should not attach to the interior of the h...

Re: What' is "the code" for SCA fighting?
http://proxy.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=2250849 This is a fantastic article on team sports and "the code." Is there a code in the SCA? What are some of the basic tenets of "the code"? I didn't think this belonged on Philosophy of Chivalry, tho I'm sure some of it could spill over. That's life. ...

As another idea for a tourney, which as far as I know has never been actually done, because it's pretty complex, and the list staff hasn't yet agreed to do it. I should mention that it was designed perhaps 20 years ago by a local knight who's a PhD in theoretical physics, though his job these days ...

In practice I do not feel its that bad. I'd like to see it used for a while. My 1st question regarding this was Gulf Wars as I was concerned about the war convention as I was informed the it would not change I see no other issue with it until we play with it for a while. I belive Sir William was go...

Re: Top Ten East and Pics Elsewhere
Ansteorra Duke Alaric Drake You know I rarely see him at the top of lists made by Ansteorrans but I reallly think that a true student of the game HAS to put him up there. I see him a bit like our Gregory, who has also gone underrated for many years. Maybe now that he'll finally be a duke that will ...

Matt, I've been working for about 2 years now with 4130 spring steel (its similar to 1050 but a little bit more forgiving with the heat treating process). We use .032" steel (23 gauge) for gauntlets and elbow cobs. We use .040" steel (21 gauge or so) for knees, legs, and other peices. They have not ...

Honestly, unless you need to use it as a loss-leader, or as a way to attract them towards other items, I wouldn't bother. The profit margin on rattan stinks. I think all of the reasons posted above have some truth to them. For me (and I believe that my fighting *has* substantially improved since my knighting) its been due to: #1) Upholding the reputation as a knight.
