JP, in the pictures you link to you are not in the stance Caspian is talking about (sword low, shield high).... Plus, it's not even you in those pictures. It's that other guy. Aw schnikey! You're right... I only looked at degrassi's shield location and said "Hey that looks like my stance"... I've s...

Well... I have just recently completed (in the past couple of months.) a Pembridge style greathelm that I have worn for testing that is hardened and tempered 16ga 1050. Given most helms are 14ga or thicker, the weight of this helm is quite a bit less (about 9 pounds). It was padded with the needed ...

JP, thanks! You've inspired me. I'll be doing something like this soon. A couple more newbie questions, though. Hopefully I'm not getting on your nerves. How are you heating your pieces to orange? I'm thinking a propane weed burner might do the trick. What do you use? Are you using your kitchen ove...

Wow. 21 gauge. That's gotta be a joy to work. Mind a few more newbie questions? Where do you find the high carbon .032 you guys are using? 4130 Sheet Steel from AED Motorsports. These guys are awesome. Make sure you order annealed, not normalized. m What's your heat treating process? Anything like ...

I used to fight this style.... I found there to be a lot of disadvantages, that prevented me from starting in this stance....I use this stance as a transition stance, and as a lefty counter, but that's really about the extent of it. http://www.cchipman.com/combat/Events/2003_05_23_Steppes_Warlord_XX...

One of the "secrets" that JP's holding out on is that because the armour is hardened & tempered high carbon steel, it's *very* thin, which makes forming a dream & why it's so light. If it's the .032 that we typically use, that's approximately *21 GAUGE*. You can almost form it with your hands when ...

Well, I just finished the polish on my new legs (made from a modified pattern from Sir Alexis), so I thought I'd share a pic of them in their highly polished state before I put the Boeshield on them. re: the whole "how hard to hit" thing... Does anybody have an instrument capable of measuring pounds of force delivered? If you want it only about an inch deep. Just pound one out of a tree stump with a sledge hammer. Sand to finish and wala! Something awesome at 3 Kings this weekend..
The War of 3 Kings is an awesome melee event sponsored every fall by the shire of Rosenfeld in Ansteorra, and is always a theme event with three sides. This year we did the Rebellion of 1173 with Eleanor, Henry II, and Louis the VII. Your truly got to be Louis The super cool medeival moment was when...

Looking for very shallow very wide dish...
I'm looking for a dishing form suitable for breastplates, etc... things like 1" deep with 10" diameter is the kind of thing I'm looking for. Does anyone have one or have a suggestion?

Re: New ( or old ) Training Aid- camcorder
When I first started in the SCA (I can hear my dentures creaking now at 35) I was regulary getting pummeled. Oh, I had Dukes, Barons, Knights and Squires giving me advice on where to put this and where to put that and I took every word from their mouth like scripture from the heavens. BUT when I st...

IMO, having recently switched from a gorgeous Coventy Sallet to an open face salada, it does make a difference. For singles, the difference is neglible, and can be overcome by proper eye positioning, and small head movements. However, for melees, the close face helms cut out a lot of peripherial unl...

I bet th...

Something else that no one has spoken on is poor Technique. Sorry, but that is rules lawyering to the nth degree. Thrusting? not by any measure. Thrusting is pretty well defined AND understood to mean "to move the line of force along the long axis of the weapon". Cross checking is not that. Your right Thrusting isn't cross checking, and I'm not trying to sa...

A) It could matter how "cross check" is defined. If we define it as hockey does, where there is outward movement in a strike, then I think it should probably be illegal. B) Illegal or not, a striking cross check to the face should still bring up a court of chivalry. Why? Because of intent. This is ...
