Keltyck, what do you mean by you need plating also? dosent that defeat the purpose of having chain? Historically, you didnt need plate armour, it was a natural evolution of armour development, and as with any new and improved item, it was utilized whenever possible by those who could afford it. Tran...

Good lord man..... that is exquisite. I agree, the brasswork is amazing...as is the mirror finish on it...I think i can see what kind of camera you're using in the reflection I have a special fondness for these and other viking age helms. You are extremely talented, and that helm is worthy of Harald...

Mail alone for SCA is NOT adequate, nor does it conform to the rules. Rigid protection (rigid is defined generally as plastic, aluminum, steel, hardened leather, etc) is required in key areas. Butted mail is also not sufficient protection vs real bladed weapons used full force; the links will split ...

Too bad none of you live near me (Laconia, NH), I have 3 good sized pieces of 16 gauge hot rolled I'd give to someone. I wont ever use it all, and I kept one quarter of a 4x8 foot sheet for my own armour putterings. Its rusted (its currently being kept in an old 68 GMC pickup cab gramps uses for a s...

I dont know if alodine is commercially available...we use it on aerospace components...instead of anodize, which requires an electric current to open the pores in the metal, alodine is more like a paint, but is slightly acidic and more than a little hazardous to handle without proper gear (we need t...

Strongbow, I was referring to the fact its cheaper to field crossbowman because anyone can use one without much training...the longbowmen were highly trained men, spending years training with their bows. A ragtag bunch of peasant can be handed crossbows and told to fire them en masse. I know a cross...

You need rigid protection for SCA combat...hardened leather, plastic, aluminum, steel etc. Mail alone or fabric with mail designs is not sufficient. You will not find mail cheaper than what you see on Ebay. Mail takes a lot of time to make and is very labor intensive. You do not need mail to fight i...

I wouldnt say mass weapons and crossbows became popular to oppose mail...the arms race argument is as varied and heated as the destructive testing arguments, but in my opinion, maces were not that common a thing on the battlefield, at least not in comparison with pole weapons and swords. Pole weapon...

You dont have too. I stated an opinion, no more, no less. The SCA uses rattan because they cannot use steel weapons. If you can figure out a way to make some armour out of rattan, or wood, or bambo, and have it be protective and legal, more power to you. Plastic is fine by me, so long as its not gla...

It is out of print now, and demand is rising with the explosive increase in re-enactment and sport combat. Hence the increase in price. While I applaud the attempt at semi authenticity your boffers group strive for DaveS, I think its pretty silly to allow plastic and foam weapons, but not plastic armour. My point was that Dark Victorys armour may be more suited to less aggressive sport combat such as boffers, more so than something ...

My other question is, if the knees didnt look very well to start with, ie; you should have been able to tell how theyd move and leave a gap during warm up, why was she allowed on the field in faulty armour and insufficient padding? Isnt all gear checked out before combat begins? Even at practices? D...

When people want good plastic armour, I always refer them to Dalewyn of Alchemy Armoury. I think his stuff is way better looking and functional than the other plastic armourers stuff out there. I've heard a lot of bad reviews regarding Dark Victory. I wouldnt necessarily call it shit, I just wouldnt...

This is probably in the top 3 as far as books to have in your library if you are a serious armour enthusiast. I own a copy myself, and it's one of the ones I refer to for myself and others all the time. Thats a decent price as well (not great, but decent and worth it)....copies on Amazon go for $100...

Something that might also factor in to historically forge welded links (and maybe even modern welded links) is the heat affected zone...which, on a surface area as small as a mail link probably encompasses the whole thing, but anyways, in the aerospace industry, when we weld certain things, most not...

Because in the past, when I've linked discussions from Arador, nobody bothered to go look at them. The f...

Gunnora (Christie Ward) is one of the top sources to go to for viking information. I found her site a few years ago, and refer others to it happily. Frankly, I don't have a lot of confidence in Ebay for selling high-end custom stuff. People go to Ebay looking for bargains. It's hard to differentiate high-end stuff from cheap Indian stuff, so people buy the cheap stuff. Exactly....damn Steve...you said in 3 lines what I rambled on and on about I...
