I am also in favor of a PDF. I don't know how much of an embuggerance this is, but perhaps two different resolution scans could be made available: lower res for easier download and reading onscreen, and a higher (300dpi) version of at least the photos for those as wants to print them out at better q...

Tracy, thanks for the link to those awesome pictures! Every time I think I've seen all the details on the Charles de Blois that one can get without making a pilgrimage to Lyon, someone else goes there and shares their bounty. Pity about the focus, but them's the breaks with non-flash museum photos. ...

Doug, I just discovered this thread, after the auction officially ended- would you still be willing to part with Pyle's "Men of Iron" for $5 plus postage? (I always liked this book but my old copy is falling apart.) Also, check your PMs in re: the Churburg book, please.

Jehan, I'm glad you like the manuscript. I agree, there's all kind of really interesting stuff going on. For instance, did you notice (A) none (or almost none) of the bascinets have visors, (B) there's one fellow wearing what I swear is an intentional depiction of a German-style oniontop form (find ...

Oh, no argument with safety- but my feeling is that it was as much a matter of personal choice for the individual man-at-arms in period as it is for us today. Fight in what you can afford and in what works best for you, maybe trading a little protection for comfort or reduced weight. Recall that som...

Regarding fully enclosed greaves, they were used for most of the era from 1350AD to 1500AD, and when they were not--specifically from commonly about 1300AD to a few strange examples as late as 1400AD--I am willing to state that mail chausses were always worn. I have seen some manuscript images that...

The Philly visor came from Chalcis and is probably Venetian.

Doug, how much 14th/early 15th century material does Philly have on display? I've never been there and I'd love to pay a visit if it has enough stuff up my alley.

Make sure you ask everyone involved to sign a photo release, lest you get hassled later for tossing their images around without permission. And if this project works, maybe someone will do one for the 14th century. Hint hint. :)

That's a klappvisier, wiseass... which is also kind of interesting, since I've never seen one used as a helm in an achievement before. Must be a Polish thing. As for the crest, if this were the English system, I'd call that a royal crown--as opposed to a ducal or baronial coronet, say--but I'm not t...

Yep- in fact, I have the catalog of the Chartres treasury that those pictures came from. The armor was on tour at the Louvre when I was there two years ago (went to see it the next day), and the coat was not in the museum and must have been in the cathedral vault, which we couldn't get in to see bec...
