Well, I figured I was dreaming, but it always helps to hear it from an authority. Reckon I'll do Pennsic again in my crappy 'ol 30-pound 16-gauge Wisby coat, and devote the lead-up time to more practical pursuits instead. Thanks, all. Unless anyone is bringing a spare corazina in my size they want t...

Production time on a corazina?
I'm looking for advice. I'm thinking of trying to put together a new corazina in time for Pennsic, but my ability to estimate production time on such things is pretty awful. I want to do a solid BP with a front fauld in six or so segments; a back assembly with a large keystone-shaped plate (vis. the...

Adam- my new website is still under development and will hopefully be up by Pennsic. I have a temporary page at www.gildedboar.com with an image of the pourpoint I made for Guillaume de Cambrai. I'm very much a part-time business with a busy dance card, and will likely not be taking any new orders u...

You might be able to find a size small DIY bascinet top and have someone rivet a very short 18-guage side/skirt piece to it. My sense is that a child's size might be as much a matter of neck/head height as it is head size. Besides, a little extra room for padding means he can grow into it for a coup...

It's funny that polyester fill gets such a bad rap when people swear by Under Armour shirts and shorts that are made out of 100% polyester. It's the difference between "wicking" and "insulating." Guts notwithstanding, that's a very pretty lentner/jupon/coat-armor/thingy. (Pick a name, it has so man...

Yah- I take the TS reference as a suggestion that we perhaps can feel less guilty about making our garb in linen to combat the hideous modern temperature, as they might have done it in period, but not as a proof of widespread use of linen outerwear by any means. Having said that, I give you appendix...

My gut feeling is that the translators of the TS might not have included the passage about linen clothing, nor illustrated it with pictures of everyday people doing everyday tailoring tasks, unless it made sense from a European perspective and they expected that readers would actually get something ...

You might want to join the Armour Research Society (please note: not an "official" sales pitch) as a resource; there is a lot of very specialized material bandied about by very knowledgeable folks there that doesn't make it onto the Archive. For instance, several members just had a long and in-depth...

Bravo. I am a dyed-in-the-wool 14th century guy and know only slightly more than squat about the Viking age, but I'm impressed by everyone's ability in this thread to focus down so constructively on the nitpicky details. I wish I had enough kit to put together a camp from my own period for such a tr...

Nope, chausses don't get lined. It stops them from stretching properly. I can't think of a single case of extant chausses/hose that are lined. Do you mean "not lined all the way to the foot," or "not lined in any way?" If the latter, I disagree. There are examples in 15th-century art of hose that a...

It is possible to weave cloth so that it is two different colours, inside and out. I know of many illustrations in which the gown is two different colours inside and out and this has been explained by this weaving technique. I can't see why they wouldn't use that technique for hosen as well. That s...

You can see the vent holes around the camail liner. I was used to a decent airflow around my neck and throat through unlined mail, so the full padding treatment was like putting my head in an insulated bag. The holes help a bit; the rest is just getting accustomed to it. The hole at the crown where ...

May I ask if you'd ever think of making a liner like that for those of us with less time or sewing skills? Possibly. It's nearly as tricky as fitting a body for a pourpoint, possibly moreso, because you have to get a perfect fit to both the head and the helmet. In short, I'd want to have access to ...

This was my third or fourth attempt to get it right, so it was a LONG time coming- nobody should expect miracles on their first pass.
