Re: Boffer Helm

Sounds about right. Like all regs, it's up to the discretion of the marshal on the scene. I can't see a marshal disqualifying a kid for a technicality based on nonspecific wording for an otherwise perfectly safe helmet.

Re: Boffer Helm

It's the "segmented construction" business that seems vague. I don't see how something with riveted, overlapping segments can possibly be less safe than something made of a continuous piece if the material is equally rigid.

A quick scan of the online armorial yields no hits, meaning the arms are probably not registered.

Re: Boffer Helm

I wouldn't quite say a boffer helm would be as much work as an adult helm. the metal could be thinner, which is much easier to work with. Really depends. It's still a bunch of labor to dish an 18 ga.top, even if you don't need heat; and a riveted great helm involves the same number of pieces that n...

Re: Boffer Helm

I have a used SCA helmet that's only borderline legal at 16 ga.- it's well-made and has a nice presence, but I wouldn't put it in a serious fight. It's a spangenhelm, loosely Gallo-Roman in design, and padded out for a smaller head at the moment. I can send pics if interested.

you have that great bascinet thing with the 2 crowns on it! Two! and it has a visor like an Armet!
Jeff, I think we're seeing an armet in the foreground with a large crown at brow level, and the top of a different helmet directly behind him with a little coronet/finial at the peak.

Heh. I just recalled that my great helm is the work of Mr. Dupras. He sold it to me before heading off to university, if I recall correctly. It's a nice piece of armoring.

I suspect that design is more Victorian than medieval. If you search eBay for "India barrel lock," you will find a pile of replicas that seem a little closer to the truth.

Re: Where to buy correct medieval locks?

I keep my ear to eBay. Interesting things pop up now and then- I got a bronze 20th-century reproduction from Italy in a really cool zoomorphic design, sort of half-lion, half-dachshund. I also picked up a stunning little iron barrel lock from Feed the Ravens (they're on Etsy), in a pattern that is a...

That's my current thinking too- Coolus or Montefortino style. Basic welded bowl, finial, hinged cheekpieces, low-profile neck protector, welded-on rod to simulate the repousée edge, "jockey cap" neck flare, grill.

ISO Gaulish helmet

A friend is portraying a Gaul circa 100 BC (I think, will have to double check the period) and she's in the market for a new helmet for an SCA kit. Re: Custom Made Wooden-Shields

Tempted. I just finished a new tournament shield, and spent so much time doing the paint job I'd rather not get it chewed up in practice, so I'm thinking of getting a "stunt double" shield for regular use. I'd just as soon not do all the labor again myself. What's your usual turnaround?

Once when I was in college and a total military-wannabe-poser, I was put in my place (and quite rightly so) by a fellow in ROTC who remarked, "Those who have it, don't flaunt it. Those who flaunt it, don't have it." Still rings true.

Ernst, I think we're seeing a heavily stuffed gambeson, not pteruges. The shorter garment on top appears to be a coat-of-plates, judging by the cut, blue paint and the scalloped edge. I suspect it's a good generation older than 1380.

Re: WTB Gold or Green Wool

The wool is only a decorative layer; the canvas foundation will be doing most of the work. (This was surely the case with the later corrazinas and brigandines that used silk velvet on the outside!) Thus, I don't think the weight or weave of the wool will make a tremendous difference to the performan...
