I'd have to size it down on my other computer, this one doesn't have photoshop, but in brief- it's your basic flattened JPEG. I tried a whole range of different DPI settings and different resolutions, to no avail. What is your recommended file format?

If it were a Victorian copy of a proper great helm, it might be worth that price. This character clearly doesn't know jack shit about armor.

I just took a stab at doing my own in Photoshop and went nowhere. What is the secret to making a legible image within the ridiculously tiny size constraints that are called for here? (Also, even when I knocked it down to a miniscule 3kb, the system kept refusing to upload on the grounds that it wasn...

Re: One piece raised helmets. discount!
I have no stake in this sale, but I'd like to point out that the second raised kettle (although meant as a late medieval pattern, I'm sure) bears a good resemblance to the "bowler kettle" on one of the 12th-century Lewis chessmen.

Re: market survey. what would you like to see from mad Matts
Expand on your coat-of-plates kit niche and offer some different forms, such as one with a solid breastplate (á la the Hirschstein Castle find), globose with fauld, and "corazina." I'm sure lots of people are willing to do the leather/cloth and rivets themselves, if they can get the plates pre-shape...

Re: Avoiding the 'Diaper' Look
I think you're postulating a system more complicated than it needs to be. I suspect one tightly-fitted garment worn over another would be very binding and restrictive, and in the case you seem to be suggesting of an outer layer made in a conventional pattern worn over a grand asiette garment, doubly...

Re: Rust care on mild steel
Mild steel contains a high content of Bejeezus. You have to polish the Bejeezus out of it. Seriously. A good high polish gives the rust fewer nooks and crannies to grab hold of at the microscopic level and is more effective in the long run, IMHO, than any amount of oil or wax. Also, paint the inside...

Re: Plates in the pourpoint or the gambeson?
T, are you aware of any images actually showing leg harness pointed to a sleeveless doublet in the 15th century? We have both art and text documenting such a garment holding up the hose, but I'm wondering if the suspension of leg armor is entirely an SCA leap of faith.

Re: SCA Heraldry Question...amd I going to get in trouble?
I have a tale of cadency in action. Walking down the road at my first Pennsic, I met a knight I had never seen before, but knew instantly who he was- Sir Stephen of Bellatrix, bearing on his shield Duke Paul's arms with a label. Just for fun, my wife decided last year to have little tattoos done on ...

Re: (Christian) Religious Practices "In the Field"
That's a mighty general question. Did you have a specific century in mind? My master's thesis (work in progress) touches on this subject for 9th - 11th century Germany. Here are a couple of sources that you may find useful, cut and pasted from my bibliography: Bachrach, David. Religion and the Condu...

Re: Avoiding the 'Diaper' Look
I disagree about the braes waistband. His doublet is coming down over the top of the braes, and the braes themselves are of the later "tidy whitey" style. AFAIK, only baggy boxer-style braes were used to support hose. The way the hose are sagging, I would say they have multiple points wrapping aroun...

Re: Avoiding the 'Diaper' Look
They're somewhat interchangeable. Here's my preferred usage, which is very generalized and there are always exceptions. Doublet = a short coat/vest designed to hold up hose. Cote = coat = almost any upper-body garment, but usually something looser that goes over the doublet or shirt. (Rule of thumb-...

Re: Avoiding the 'Diaper' Look
The doublet need not necessarily be padded or made in grand asiette style. You can do lightweight wool lined with linen, or two layers of linen, and be quite comfortable. Both patterns were used into the first third of the 15th century. According to Harmand, if I recall correctly, a doublet "in four...

Re: Avoiding the 'Diaper' Look
Since our ancestors did not know the answer to the Riddle of Spandex, "action" braies had to have been made using precise tailoring and/or bias-cut material. The same principle applies to the grand assiette doublet- the sleeve is constructed to go all the way up into the armpit and out again with al...

Re: Avoiding the 'Diaper' Look
Based on how skin-tight the "boxer brief" braies are depicted in most MS images, I suspect they may be partly cut on the bias. Anyone ever experiment with this? It's on my long and cluttered garb to-do list.

Period-obsessive though I am, I would rather wear white spandex compression shorts under split hose and give the proper appearance that have white linen braies that aren't tailored correctly.

To put it simply- to make BCSH, take a pattern for joined hose with a codpiece, then omit the center panel(s) and codpiece.

Re: Opinions needed ASAP on coffer style
Well, I went with my gut and got it anyway. There's a 15th century piece in the Met that has intricate carvings and doesn't have quite the same peak, but the form and the metal trim were close enough for me to justify an impulse buy.

They look as though they came from a decorator suit- no complex curves, stamped- and bead-rolled shaping.
