Re: blazon this
Collecting a lot of dust. I haven't been in armor for almost a year and a half- lost a whole lot of weight so none of my old kit fits any more, and have taken the opportunity to build a completely new and consistent harness from the doublet out. Slowly but surely.

Re: Opinions: pigface visor thickness?
Yah, good enough. I'll put my micrometer to the thing when I get home and see what it's actually made of. Less than 16, it's a wall-hanger. :) @Wade- I was going to reinforce the oculars anyway- they aren't very well boxed. As I said, it's early Steingrim work. :) Might could add brass trim and beef...

Opinions: pigface visor thickness?
...so I have this ancient, primeval hundsgugel bascinet by Steingrim, the visor for which was never attached. I'm toying with the idea of cleaning up the visor and mounting it on a different helmet. Trouble is, it appears to be made from only 16-18 gauge mild. For everyone who's built snouted visors...

I saw it as sable with a "gleam."I guess that's sable. It could as easily be argent, as depicted.

Re: Input on late 14th century Germanic/Scandinavian kit
It amuses me that the "Phrygian" helmet, as symbolic of being a "Roman," appears to be the only unorthodox bit of this fellow's kit. Everything else is pretty much par for the German course. Kinda reminds me of Star Trek: The Next Gen aliens- they look just like us, except for the noses. :) ...and m...

Re: Gauging Interest - Welded Bronze Maille & Hidden Gorgets
I believe as a rule, standards were buckled- I put mine at the side, but the back may be more accurate. if you're using hardened leather, I would suggest pre-punching lacing holes around the top edge for lacing. You could lace the mail to the cuirboulli directly, but then you'd have the hard-edge-ag...

Re: Gauging Interest - Welded Bronze Maille & Hidden Gorgets
The 14th-15th century ones I've seen in artwork and effigies often have a decorative, scalloped leather edge at the top, possibly a separate piece, possibly the liner flipped over and stitched down. It helps keep the mail from chafing the neck.

Re: Gauging Interest - Welded Bronze Maille & Hidden Gorgets
My .02 based on the version(s) I've done: make the mail standard to the desired shape and then add plates/padding to reinforce it, rather than starting with the usual SCA gorget and trying to shape the mail to fit. You'll end up with a more low-profile dog collar defense in the end, but it will look...

Re: Gauging Interest - Welded Bronze Maille & Hidden Gorgets
I'd be interested to see your prototype for the mail-covered gorget. I made one for myself that's pretty damn complex, but it involves a quilted liner with the plates hidden inside.

Aha- then I am defining "frog" as a small wooden toggle that goes through a loop like a button and connects one piece of canvas to another. Different other creature. How much to make a bunch of those?

Re: Odd market research on tent frogs
I'd pay that, definitely. I have been intending for years to hang up internal walls in my bell wedge, and I've tried and failed miserably to fashion frogs out of joinery dowels and other things. I would probably be in the market for a couple of dozen if you get them done. I'd need them smaller, thou...

Re: Holding up maille chausses, how did they do it?
We can see here that when the braes are let down, the waist still looks the same. This is what we would expect if it were a casing with a belt inside. Mac, I generally don't unroll my waistband to use the john, I just untie the drawstring and slide the rolled assembly down en masse, then pull it ba...

Re: Holding up maille chausses, how did they do it?
I've found that rolling down the waistband of long braes (with a drawstring, haven't tried it with a belt) does three things. First, as pointed out, it tightens the chausses. Second, if you roll the front down farther than the back, it brings the drawstring down below the hip bones and under the bel...

Re: WTB: 1580-ish commoners' outfits, both genders
Thanks for the leads. Syke's Sutlery has passable Venetians as well. I have no illusions about finding complete off-the-rack outfits up to my standards, but rather, hoping that someone close to my size or my wife's might have some older items in their own collection they'd be willing to part with. A...

WTB: 1580-ish commoners' outfits, both genders
In March, my wife and I are going to be doing kitchen and serving duty, respectively, for a feast set in 1580's northern Italy. We have nothing in our collective wardrobe that fits the bill. Before I start sizing us up for new outfits, I wanted to throw the request out here to see if anyone had some...

The mods do not delete posts for "sold" items. They have better things to do with their time. Just put "sold" in the title and let it fade away.
