Re: FS/Auction - Steel/Copper Mail Shirt
It's pretty, but I think you're going to be hard-pressed to sell it at that price. Obviously you put a whole lot of work into it, but consider that it's possible to buy a riveted shirt for around the same price and 2/3 the weight, and a butted shirt for as low as $120. The demand these days is for m...

Tracy, I think you have it right. Late 15th century joined hose ride up pretty high.

Re: Late Fourteenth Century Arming Garments II: The Upper Bo
Ok, that's just weird. There seems to be a cuff on the sword-arm and the wrinkling of a sleeve, also a square neckline, but the other arm looks quite bare. Ya got me.

Re: Late Fourteenth Century Arming Garments II: The Upper Bo
In the back of my mind there is a reference to points being cut, not untied. Does this ring a bell with anyone? I can't think of the source either, but I seem to recall a reference to points in a tournament or judicial combat being knotted tightly and then having the loose ends cut off, in which ca...

Re: Late Fourteenth Century Arming Garments II: The Upper Bo
I can't make much sense out of that sleeve to be honest; I can't figure out where the shoulder and wrist seams are or why there would be points at that spot Sean, the bulge of the top right edge corresponds to the point of the shoulder, and the "scoop" on the top left is the underarm, if that helps...

I would if I wasn't late for work... Do you see the square chunk that's missing from the upper right edge? Look immediately to its left.Perhaps, someone can re-post the pic with circles around the places....?

Re: Late Fourteenth Century Arming Garments II: The Upper Bo
Excellent point, you are quite correct. It's also possible that this could have been made specifically as a funerary garment. In that case, it makes sense that it is both of rich material and has the features of a military garment, if it's a ceremonial representation of the man's rank. The distincti...

Re: Late Fourteenth Century Arming Garments II: The Upper Bo
The $10K questions is- do the "armor" eyelets show any signs of wear? I don't think it's beyond the pale for a man of means to have worn armor for parade/ceremonial purposes over a fancy civil doublet, without voiders. That's just my gut talking- I haven't seen pictorial evidence of that per se.

Re: Late Fourteenth Century Arming Garments II: The Upper Bo
Mac, I think the unwritten part of that question was, "If the doublet only holds up his hose, then it is probably civilian, and therefore why...?" Drew- I wouldn't worry too much about finding the absolute answer to what was pointed where. Experiment. Put several sets of holes in your coat and move ...

Re: Late Fourteenth Century Arming Garments II: The Upper Bo
If you look at the MyArmoury discussion, it establishes the use of sleeve points as simply decorative elements on civilian 15th century doublets. Having said that, I'm quite certain this is an arming coat.

Re: Late Fourteenth Century Arming Garments II: The Upper Bo
Mac, the top image is exactly the one I was thinking of. The style and lettering are identical to the images shown in Mann's article. Toby cites it as "1435 - 1445 King Syphax (fol 2825v), Istituto al Gabinetto, Rome," whereas Mann refers to the MS being held in the Camera dell Stampe, Rome, but I h...

Re: Late Fourteenth Century Arming Garments II: The Upper Bo
I believe there is one figure in the "Paduan sketchbook", second q. 15th c., showing a king wearing an arming coat with points coming through the upper sleeves. This was from a series of line drawings of mythical/classical kings in contemporary harness. Several figures are reproduced in J.G. Mann's ...

Re: Late Fourteenth Century Arming Garments II: The Upper Bo
The Charles de Blois garment had tabs with eyelets for pointing inside the garment, the same could be true for an arming garment. Actually, the points are sewn directly to the peplum- formed by strips of cloth twisted into strings, I believe. Unfortunately, this is the best resolution image I have....

Re: 14th century leg harness buckles
James, absolutely- there needs to be a leather extension on the buckle side to get the buckle far enough around the elbow/knee for access. However, my sense from the discussion is that the buckle proper was still on a metal plate rather than attached directly to the strap.

Hi, Danica-
Welcome to the Archive. Do you have any examples of your work that's more closely based on historical clothing and less cosplay/LARP-oriented? There is greater demand for the former here than the latter.

Re: Habergeon trade?
Tasty food for thought, thanks. I'll see how the shirt moves with me after I do the basic alteration before deciding where to go next- I will probably want to field it first and then start doing expansions/contractions/gussets at some future point, lest it stay in the shop forever.

Re: Habergeon trade?
I've been patching and piecing another shirt for some time- I'm not very happy with it, but I've learned a thing or two. One approach I tried with the old one that I plan to repeat with the new is to remove a strip down the front to reduce the circumference asymmetrically, and turn it into a front-o...

Re: 5 Pc Knees For Sale, $50 also 14thc Elbow Cops
Interesting labor-saving technique there on the elbow fans! You might want to try riveting them from the inside out instead, countersinking the rivets into beveled holes and polishing them into near-invisibility if you want to make them look more like they were raised in one piece. Of course, with t...

Habergeon trade?
I just purchased the last mail shirt that Historic Enterprises had in stock at a discount, having mis-read the listing and thought it was a size small: 44" actual chest measurement for a 40" chest. However, it turned out to be a medium, 50" to fit a 44" chest. The actual stats as cut-and-pasted from...

Unless you have in an image explicitly showing two different helmets (and not a bascinet and a straw sun-hat, say), it's always possible it's a bascinet with a brim halfway up. I know at least one of those exists.
