Re: ISO steel armor buckles
How much would you like for them when your class is done? 1" is probably fine for the cuisse back straps, but the ones going around the back of the knee and the top of the greave should be closer to 1/2 or 5/8, now that I think about it.

Oh, I'm sure I can make them--I've done it before--but my life has so many moving parts nowadays, I can spare the money right now more readily than the time.

ISO steel armor buckles
Who is currently selling or making flattened trapezoidal steel arming buckles for 1/2 to 3/4" straps? My google-fu has failed me. I recently acquired a set of Jeff Hedgecock arms equipped with these, I'm putting together a set of legs to match, and I would like the buckles to be similar. An off-the-...

Re: Some dagger/knife scabbards from the weekend
Cool. If you can e-mail me at redbarbarian at comcast dot net, I'll send you a photo of the weapon and maybe the belt and purse it's likely to be worn with, and you can recommend construction and color options. I can then pop it in the mail with a check and a return label. I've also got a sword that...

Re: What can you just not buy?
The other original of the same pattern--the one in the Spanish museum, the link for which I can't find--has the chain and cap intact, IIRC. I will certainly accept the probability that these were intended to be oil lamps. Aside from the cap and spout, they are nearly identical in form (if not dimens...

The German National Museum in Nuremburg has what is probably another original from the same workshop:

Re: What can you just not buy?
I know a number of potters making aquamaniles, but I too have not seen a metal one outside of a museum. Erhard und Söhne, an early 20th-century bronze casting firm, made a reproduction of a 13th-14th century German lion aquamanile that's currently in a Spanish museum, IIRC. Numerous copies are stil...

That's more or less a 15th century arming doublet, although the triangular gores over the pectorals appear in 14th century grand asiette style. Not bad-looking at all. http://www.amazon.com/Medieval-Knight-Arming-Jacket-Medium/dp/B009D440V4 Here's the listing. It appears to be out of stock. At this ...

Heh. I work in the costume shop of a professional ballet company and get to hang out with two dozen ballerinas, but they all work so hard during the season that I'd never get the chance to draw them into my reenacting orbit. Might be a fun summer project, though.

More power to you if you have the means. There are no uninteresting periods of history. Does each outfit include a different beautiful lady hanging off your arm? Maybe I should experiment with a Tuareg persona on the side......have a far less focused scope for kits in both time and geography.

Godric, it seems as though there's a need for a 14th century armoring seminar down your way. :) Are your kids trying to get projects done before the holidays, or can they wait until the new year? I'll see your qualification and raise you one.
Based on the apparent flattening of the rivet heads that I'm observing in this piece, I think these rivets have solid heads, not domed hollow ones. Common usage notwithstanding, they just seem modern to me.

Re: Coat of plates I haven't seen before .. help IDing?
I'm with Bob. The nails/rivets strike me as modern ones with solid round heads that have been slightly flattened by being peened against an anvil or other hard surface. That's the effect I get every time when I peen domed rivets without benefit of a dished riveting stake.

Re: Jacopo Cavalli and pointing 14th c Italian arm harness
Assuming the arm harness in question is pointed on, you would probably need to attach it after putting on the mail. Perhaps the sleeve is loose enough to facilitate this, with the buckles being there to tighten the sleeve afterwards? Just a guess. Mail sleeves do hang open quite a bit, since gravit...

Re: braies question
Not I. Most of the images I've seen of late 14th to early 15th century hose that could be either "late separate" or "early joined" show them in the up position, and the braes are obscured by the doublet. On the other hand, in those images I have seen of men of the appropriate period with separate ho...

Re: braies question
True enough, but let's say brown/natural falls into the same category as white for my arguement- i.e., not dyed. The light blue ones are very curious. My sense is that 15th century "speedo" braes are designed specifically to go under fully joined hose, since even closely-pointed individual hose woul...

That seems unlikely. The point of having white underwear is that they can be washed in hot water. Dyed braes might look nice once, but then you would have to choose between keeping the color and making them sanitary again.
