I think it rather depends on the newbie. Is he the sort who is going to be able to plow through Castiglione's "The Courtier", or Froissart, or the Paston letters, or the chronicles of Joinville and Villehardouin? Or are his eyes just going to glaze over at the writing style and conventions of the pe...

You can find benders very cheaply, I think I paid less than $20 for mine. Or you can fill the pipe or tube with packed sand and then bend over any curved form; the sand will keep it from creasing.

There's a table of armour weights in Malcolm Vale's "War and Chivalry". Pieces from the Wallace Collection, including a couple of helms c. 1390, the bulk ( and all of the body and limb armour ) 1450 and later, alas. Do you have those? Also a couple of helms in the exhibition catalog "Treasures from ...

Cheese curd is signifigantly different from cheese. it is the pre-cursor of cheese. it has not been allowed to ferment, and thus has not reached a low enough ph (around 4-5 , cheddar is usually pH5.2) at the proper ph, withthe proper salinity, most spoilage organisms are inhibited. molds will grow ...

You really have to know the individual items. For instance a lot of their swords are made with the infamous rat-tail tangs...but I am given to understand that a few aren't. Ask about this, though the sales person often does not know anything about the merchandise. I'd echo the extra-special caution ...

Thomas, Bob, reassure me further about the cheeses. I remember not so many years ago it was possible to find quite a selection of cheeses in your garden-variety supermarket, packaged in waxed paper or cloth and in unrefrigerated displays. I used to take these "to the field" with me when I was in the...

Considering the huge time range of the Society---even the "guest in the court" attitude will not comfortably embrace a Viking in the 16th century, or a landsknecht in First Crusade Antioch, etc. Perhaps it would help to think of ourselves as folk who have died and for some reason awoken in a strange...

To hang a sword you'd use a little noose, of course. Seriously, though, I vaguely recall seeing a drawing once of an interesting arrangement, I think it was Saxon or Anglo-Saxon. The bottom end of the baldric ended in a large, flat metal ring ( actually it was slightly teardrop-shaped ) through whic...

I too think they look like separate items, but I'm not convinced they are protruding portions of an underlying piece like the Bichler one.
