You could try acrylic cabochons, dyed to ehatever colour you want. They might scratch occasionally but they're cheap and shouldnt break or shatter.

I would deffinitely buy a few of these in the unassembled form. A list of what you have on the computer would be great, Lull would be cool. Le Jeu de la Hache would be a must have or the text from other fencing manuals would be cool too... I'm drooling a bit now. These could be great gifts or ransom...

Hi Sean,

I didn't know you and your wife were expecting; congrats and good luck.

Hydrocut sound sinteresting though generally speaking laser is more economical for harder materials.

I remember you mentioning the helmet project at Crown; sounds like fun.

Talk to you in future.

As a rule bascinets visors were not locked closed in any fasion. Gravity would keep the visor closed adequately until such time as it was desireale to raise or remove it.

Great helms changed form a ggod bit from the late 13th through the 14th century but were used continually throughout. Nearing the end of the 14th century they seem to have been relegated for use in jousts of peace with the visored bascinet being the helm used for war. In fact great helms of more spe...

A great bascinet proper wouldn't be contemporary with this style of harness as they don't appear until around the second decade of the 15th century. A bit earlier you begin to se bevor plates attached to bascinets with aventails but I think you'd still have the problem of your throat only protected ...

Consider making an adjustable height bench. I've got one for heavy work:

I used a 3" channel frame, a hydraulic ram and two telescoping pipe struts for stablity. The top is 1/2" thick hotrolled. I've got something like 12 or 18" of adjustment available.

Over the spring I James B comissioned me to make the plates for a simillar harness. Based on that, I'd estimate that making the plates sans the BP, including layout and punching of holes tooksomething like 10-12hrs. I'd make a WAG that the assembly would take something like 20-30hrs at least

If your interest is in costuming I'd agree. I'm interested in understanding the risks of a man-at-arms engaged in an emprise and as such prefer to embrace the added risk entailed by not hiding behind a visor.

Besides my bars are hidden by a bretache :P
