I agree. I see the SCA as being set up for participants to explore what might best be described as our cultural myths or idealizations about the middle ages trather than recreating the middle ages per se'. It allows people bring to the fore values and ideals which can be somewhat to express or devel...

How bifg would the pieces need to be Russ. I could make them up fairly easily either in AL or Stainless and punching the holes would be no problem given a diagram or clear instructions. E-mail me and we can sort out details and I'll figure a price. I might be able to do this in a plastic for you as ...

While I agree that a solid breastplate is likely to be found underneath the tunic it could be a coat of plates as well. The internal fans on the poleyns are occaisionally shown in Italian artwork from the last quarter of the 14th century( on some effigies from the Low Countries as well). Other views...

What Mike said. Though actually the first option- multiple overdyeing was the most expensive as it requirede more labor as well as starting with better quality cloth which could stand up to the multi-dye process. This gave you a deep true black colour. Cheaper blacks were availble, either through ot...

While I can't find specific source for the figure in any refrences I have it does do a good job of depicting 14th century Italian armour from @ 1360 through 1380 or so. Elements shown on the harness can be seen on a number of contemporary examples with perhaps the silver Pistoia alterpiece probably ...

I don't see a need to do much more than refine current SCA heavy rules as they work well for what thye are designed for- which in my opinion is to create a reasonably safe martial sport that allows participants to explore/experience ideas about medieval martial culture. I do think knee fighting will...

Roves are sort of conical washers used in boatbuilding in conjunction with copper nails. they are designed to spread the load of the peined nail over a broad area. Kohlmorgan's technique sounds like what are called clench nails, I'm not sure how copper nails will hold up to being bent over like that...

I'll be using copper nails peined over roves to atach the hardeware on the wooden shield I showed you at the shop, whether this is authentic I can't say as my copy of the Kohlmorgan book is on loan. I have extra if you need them. The Lancelot manuscript shows the guige and arm straps coming through ...

I'm not sure where I have this idea from but I think it likely that the moulded leather charges where gessoed to provide base for the application of gold leaf as is typically done when leafing illumination in manuscripts. I'll try to track down whether I've got a cite for this or if it's my own conj...

Update: We've done some more field testing on each other with my 5' axe and seem to have found a bit of a paradox When striking strongly against a target the heads twist and deflect as described in my earlier post However they don't deflect nearly as much with blows of lesser force. Consequently, wh...
