I agree. I see the SCA as being set up for participants to explore what might best be described as our cultural myths or idealizations about the middle ages trather than recreating the middle ages per se'. It allows people bring to the fore values and ideals which can be somewhat to express or devel...

How bifg would the pieces need to be Russ. I could make them up fairly easily either in AL or Stainless and punching the holes would be no problem given a diagram or clear instructions. E-mail me and we can sort out details and I'll figure a price. I might be able to do this in a plastic for you as ...

There are a few of extant late 14th centurybascinets/barbutas which flare out along the bottom and hae vervells for mounting an aventail. Among them A.74 from the Wallace collection, and the Ia1 bascinet at Veste Coburg.

While I agree that a solid breastplate is likely to be found underneath the tunic it could be a coat of plates as well. The internal fans on the poleyns are occaisionally shown in Italian artwork from the last quarter of the 14th century( on some effigies from the Low Countries as well). Other views...

Everything I've seen suggests that your date of @1420 is about right for the earliest evidence of mitten gauntlests in Europe. Befor that you have fingered gaunts of various forms and befor those mail, or possibly scale, mittens.

What Mike said. Though actually the first option- multiple overdyeing was the most expensive as it requirede more labor as well as starting with better quality cloth which could stand up to the multi-dye process. This gave you a deep true black colour. Cheaper blacks were availble, either through ot...

Hi Dan,

The picture may be a bit deceiving the finger tips are actually at least a half inch from the edge of the plate.

Making a more flared cuff would be no problem.

While I can't find specific source for the figure in any refrences I have it does do a good job of depicting 14th century Italian armour from @ 1360 through 1380 or so. Elements shown on the harness can be seen on a number of contemporary examples with perhaps the silver Pistoia alterpiece probably ...

Just a caution for anybody welding these onto shafts. I've heard from a custon knife maker who uses forges blades from ballbearings that you want to anneal, or at least normalize, them befor welding otherwise they have the potential to shatter violently from uneaven heating during the welding.

Given that the Combat of the Thirty lasted under 10 minutes I suggest that there will likely be time to try both styles of scenario at least once.

It would be interesting to see how the different rules effect the flow of combat.

Roves are sort of conical washers used in boatbuilding in conjunction with copper nails. they are designed to spread the load of the peined nail over a broad area. I've never tried diamond belts but I have used AO. CEramic, And Zironia.

Generally I stick with AO as they are about 1/2 the cost of the other materials so I don't mind using up one belt of each grit per helmet/breastplate.
