Up until the SEM's rewriting/clarification of the grappling rule open hand pushes were allowed in the East and without anyproblems that I am aware of.

Pushing with an open hand Targeting of the lower leg provided adequate armour is worn *as an aside I don't think an articulated leg harness wouold prevent knee dislocations, but I don't think they are a likely concern in single combat in any case* weapon surfaces smaller than 1 1/4" provided the com...

I believe the picture Chef is thinking of is from an illustration of the poems of Christine de Pisan dated to the early 15th century. It appears in AAotMK by Edge and Paddock among other places. These proto-great bascinets are a particular interest of mine right now. As Bob says, they seem to start ...

a surcote/chalmys can go a long way toward disguising a lack of mail in late 13th rigs. If you can swing it maybe add just a mail coif or aventail mounted to the helm to simulate a coif. I'll send you pic of Sir Jan's rig via e-mail for inspiration. You should have greaves by the way . Either steel ...

What was the predominent body armour of the Knightly class in the mid to Late 13th Century?

maile , hauberk, chausses etc...

The best choice for SCA would be to use hidden rigid plates where necessary over the gambeson and under the maile.

You may want to get in touch with Johannes from Windrose Armoury or Rodrick from Mandrake. I'm pretty certain that one or the other had compiled some hard data on this. Anecdotally, 3/16 brass rivets have been commonly used in the East and by Eastern armourers for years e.g. IceFalcons' helmets, wit...

The bascinet and crown your asking about were described in Laking's European Armour. At the time of Laking's writing the pair were part of the treasury of St Stanislaus Cathedral in Cracow. The bascinet is a low crowned with intact vervells and a catch above the brow which Laking suggests was for fa...

I like the last one quite a bit. Eff's suggestions are cool though I know tht there's at least one device with a lion holding swords registered in the East ( Duke Gavin Kilkenny's arms) so that might actully add a conflict.

The shield rules are an interesting approach to dealing with the "indestructibility" of wooden shields when they only face wooden weapons. I think it might go too far toward making them frail however. What are your goals in designing the ruleset? Are you trying to model European armoured combat as c...

I stain the shafts of my rattan polarms and spears. Anything that would have been wood on a real weapon. I've found the spirit based leather stains work better than any wood stains, giving a richer color and better penetration. If I'm dyeing a piece with the skin on I usually sand it lightly with @ ...

"why give up the range?"

I don't find it a trade off as most SCAd fighting takes place at the range halfswording would have been used historically. Not to mention that you don't need to use halfswoprding exclusivly but are free to use your sword conventionally as well.

Deeds of arms are performed that men-at -arms might demonstrate their prowess and thus bring honor to the ladies that in...

That stuff is usually hot rolled mild steel. It's soft, as steel goes, but should be adequately strong for a coppergate style SCA helm. It will be heavy though, especially infilled with 16ga.
