I understand, but I don't think that well made armour using period materials really does put you at a competitive disatvantage.
Your milage may vary.

Out of curiosity, what primary sources are you guys going from when you make your period liners? I'm particularly interested in particulars regarding thickness as that's something I've never come across. I've always thought of the liners I see most guys using as quasi-period since they're made to fi...

Well, the metallurgy of medieval armour is a relativly new and fairly complex area of study and if you want a real in depth examination of it I'd suggest Dr Allan Williams " The Knight and the Blast Furnace" However, I'll take a stab at a very general ,if not to say gross oversimplification. What we...

I recently ran across this place- http://www.aurorasilk.com./shop/silk-fabric.shtml
They seem to specialize in natural dying of silk. the color charts might give you an idea of what's available from the natural dyes.

Hi Kass, As an armorer I run into this all the time and it drives me nuts. I think it boils down to people not having clearly defined for themselves what their priorities are. Is it more important to have there dress be documentable or more important that they like the way it looks? Do they want to ...

Repeted thermal cycling of stainless can weaken it over time but you probably wont hit that point making a bargrill. On the other hand, I make alot of stainless bargrills and I've rarely found it necessary to heat the bars up to bend them to shape unless I'm trying for a bend of about 45 degrees or ...

The "typical" body armour would likely have been coats of plates over an aketon and haubergeon. Armour for the limbs would have run the gamut; mail chausess, gamboised cuisses, cuisses of splinted or COP type construction and possibly full plate legs (probably more likely at Poitier than at Crecy). ...

Prima facia I'd have to say very little. 1. To the best of my knowledge the mail used isn't representative typical medieval mail from any period I'm familiar. the butted construction is incorrect as is the thickness and shape of the wire. 2. We're not told ( unless I missed it) at what range the arr...

If you don't have one get a book on basic welding from the library or a bookstore. The recomended settings are a good place to start but the ideal setting will tend to vary a bit from operator to operator as well as among machines. Experiment with wire speed and voltage settings using the recomendat...

Hi Samuel, this is something I've thought about doing with armour someday but I'm hardley an expert. I do have some experience with plating from an automotive background. I believe that gold electroplting would be your best bet in terms of durability and appearance. It will wear eventually but if do...

Freiman, If she's broken this rib three times it certainly might be prudent to upgrade her body armor some. The clarifications provided in the quoted letter prettty much remove the problems/concerns with the SEM's ruling that I had. More like water for the fire as I see it http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/smile.gif I'd still like to see some types of body to body contact allowed though http://www.armourar...

It's usefull for me to know that the impression the Rough from the Hammer isn't operating is out there.
