Let me know how it goes- one thing I may not have emphasized enough is to keep going over it with the solution soaked cloth even if spots don't take right away re-wet the cloth if you need to.

Good Luck!

Hi Cet, would you mind sharing how you dealt with its fussiness? I'm not sure we have Out best and most consistent results have come from taking the piece straight form the buffing wheel (green stainless compound) and going over it with a dilute solution (2 or 3 to one) on a rag while the piece is ...

We've used it fairly often in my shop. The finish varies depending upon the degree of polish put on the pic before blackening. For us it works best on top of a high polish and produces a very black magnetite looking finish. It is fussy and constant results on large pieces is tough. Check out Baron A...

Some did- particularly helms designed for the tournament with clubs. In actual combat they would've added little true protection for their added cost and inconvenience.

I wouldn't choose hardened steel for a bar grill do to the failure characteristics compare to mild steel- better to have something in front of your face bend than break. I usually make grills from 3/16" 304 stainless bar even for mild or spring steel helmets as it is stronger than but less pron...

He's kind of spoiled for choice as you probably have the 15th century probably saw a greater variety of helmet style than any other within the SCA time frame. If he could narrow it down to which third or so of the century it would help. That said; bascinets, great bascinets, kettle-hats sallets, bar...

It's not important to me at all a I think the SCA concept of mixed art competitions is absurd, not to mention that I was only half serious in my original reply to you. That said, when judging a piece of armor the accuracy to which the modern maker can replicate the design and function of the piece m...

Pattens are occasionally shown worn with armor in 15th century sculpture but these are not showing battlefield use per say. 4130 is fairly corosion resistant, right? It's only about 1% Chromium max and no nickle so well below the 10+% chromium need to make it stainless. In my it rusts about the same as mild under the same conditions. The chromium is in the alloy for deep hardening and to increase heat treat responsivene...

4130: m 1050: m Opinions vary on what hardness range to temper to; I've seen anywhere from 38 to 50 being used for armor thought he later may have been treated to develop a bainite microstructure rather than tempered martensite. I've been going with a working hardness of 42 to 44 Rockwell for water ...

For folks who would take nothing away---what would you then do for someone who did use a wrought iron of the correct carbon content?? Rate them the equal of someone who used modern stainless?

I'd rate them lower for producing an item using inferior material than what is available

Regardless of alloy content the forming and patterning of a piece made from modern steel is going to be the same. Heat treating protocol will be different for different alloys but you can't see that in a finished piece nor can you asses it after the fact without a lab. The key differences between mo...

My view is that it's picking nits since no modern steel are a metallurgical equivalent to the materials used to make medieval armor. As long as he used a ferrous material for the stuff (rather than say aluminum or plastic) I'd be fine with it. I'd be impressed if he use sourced or smelted a real equ...
