These seem like a thickness that would still be protective from slashes without limiting mobility too much.

Ok. I think I'm tracking now on what you're saying. My apologies.
Let me find those other pictures to get an idea of target thickness

Re: Number of layers for a "lightweight" gambeson?
Gotcha gotcha. Bamboo is a natural "performance" fabric, so I'm down to do that. I was only thinking silk and wool also because of the performance fabric qualities, as well as being "natural" and relatively tough. What about....horse hair? Just another "natural" armor that comes to mind. Just a brie...

Sadly I'm not a huge fan of double breasted.
Eventually I will have some llamalar for it as well that should fairly well protect that opening. I'm also have a shirt underneath it so I wanted the option of showing it if I close it loosely.

Re: Number of layers for a "lightweight" gambeson?
Good advice, thank you, I hadn't thought of hemp. Is it naturally heat regulating? I do want to try and avoid cotton canvas of at all possible. I would think the tensile strength of silk and wool would be great for it. I guess it's different from the shear strength? If it makes a difference, it is g...

Re: Number of layers for a "lightweight" gambeson?
Sorry. It's way too hard to resize the picture on my phone. https://imgur.com/gallery/k0qL1 So, it'll be the gambeson, sectioned off into the arms, torso (laced up the sides) and four leg flaps (not sure what else to call it). Split like that for riding. I do a lot of archery, so I might try to segm...

Number of layers for a "lightweight" gambeson?
Hello, So, I'm making a semi-realistic and highly detailed costume for the renaissance festivals in my area. The costume is based on my D&D character. So, I want to make a light gambeson, that still has semi-protective properties, but is lighter and not as stiff as a historical gamebeson. So, what d...
