Screw the rules .. I'd suggest a light padded (tight weave linen shell w/ flax or horse body hair stuffing) under pad to keep the chaffing & soak up moisture (be sure it's removable) and extend the life of the leather & maille for your collar. In the end it's yer neck ... comfort for extende...

I would think someone could make a modern design, low profile spring steel gauntlet with modern rubberized padding over the joints then attach a maille cover overtop. Get the period appearance of a maille mitten with leather palm while keeping fingers intact for modern 'stick' and/or steel fighting.

Arggghh .. the curse of living in MI & Indy ... I know a batch of guys who'd fit in great with clothing, furniture and gambling/drinking gear for backdrops ... along with being former RL soldiers and 'ner-do'wells' the scrapes over shorting coin and bumping dice have a good air of realism ..

I always think of the 'Sock & Basket Guy' at Pennsic. Not sure if he has a webpage, hopefully someone here has it. His tables fold up tight and hold up well to multiple pennsics & daycamps for us. A nice tablecloth (I'd point ya to Historic Enterprises) overtop and a some good clay or leathe...
