Most of my SCA career was with a stapped shield of one form or another. Started with round and worked to heater. After I moved more to doing long (pole/spear) I found I was much more 'aggressive' in my blocking. A buckler is to me the most 'aggressive' of the bunch with a center grip being a larger ...

yup yup ... I managed to snag a set of his tooled with the 'chi-rho' symbol that I use at our practices (I can handle single strikes to the forearms in wars and melees but repeated shots during a practice when I'm working on form kills me) and they've held up beautifully. I've had many good comments...

Thomas H. has been looking at pavises for a while now and many of them are made of one piece. Kewl, so do the research show what type of wood they were made out of and any suggestions of how they were formed (i.e. clamp marks, etc.) Not trying to be a smart aleck on these, just wanting to know as I...

iain, its clearly not a dead horse. this is an issue that spans all kingdoms and effects thousands of fighters. this topic alone has spanned over 20 pages and has opened up a lot of discussion, a few trolls, some emotional retardation, and a few people that gripe about how its a dead horse and shou...

yup yup ... I'd suggest the crash pads for our game to keep the blunt trauma to a minimum. I also hide my 14th C. plate cuisses under my norse gear for practices (getting 10+ times is a world of difference vs. taking the 'sting' out of a tourney/war shot). A set of padded cuisses would be good if lo...

I'm gathering that tow is the way to go. Now I'm curious, does anyone currently use horse hair as a means of padding their liners? I've been saving the winter coat from my horses and thought I had a good project in the making. If anybody uses horse hair, how does it deal with sweat? I'm seriously t...

Hmm... but at the same time I have suffed my linen liner with horse body hair (it's a good tight weave linen) and the few hairs I've had work their way thru are less than two score at most. I also pull my liner out to clean/scrub the helm and restitch it in roughly each season so a finger full of re...

It also comes down to what type of polearm you are using .. 6' vs. 7.5' and split/plain rattan vs. 'head' ... totally different animals. Plain and long (7.5') you are long spear with some cutting. A short headed polearm you best plan on doing some dancing in your career. Keep the hand and head close...

Well I've been fighting in a set of the HE Dark Ages for the past month (2-3 practices per week @ 2-4 hrs per session). I'd suggest the herringbone/twill pattern for the wool outer tunic. I went with the natural linen undertunic and the como of them are holding up very nicely. I think part of the tr...

I fight in these on a regular basis at the Roaring Wastes practice where His Grace, Duke Brannos (Middle KEM) regularly fights. You'll need to pad the knuckles and fingertips (I use a good quality mousepad's bits, cut to shape and glued inside them). The Visby style you will want to add a 2nd strap ...

I'd be interested in seein' if you might be willing to make a set unstuffed. I have the horse hair to do the stuffing and am looking for someone to do make the vertical tubed shell. Not an expert at all by any stretch ... but aside from a helm there wasn't alot else if you were 'lower class' ... as for gauntlets maybe a set of the 'stealth gauntlets' done up in a natural brown to look like a set of leather gloves. I'm 'stretching' by using a set of Visby gaunts with are about 3...

Ravnos ... you can fight and win in period style harness over pure sport kits if you are willing to go the extra mile for it. I like to point out the Midrealm crown tourney bouts of His Grace Felix and others. Another thing to look at is what would have been your status/harness based off what you ca...

I fought in combat boots for the longest time ... they cost me my ACL (ping me a PM and I'll tell you how my Univ. of Mich. Sports Surgeon described in most graphic detail why it's mega dumb to wear combat boots in our style of sport). I fight in turnshoes now and have a set of wrestling shoes (with...
